Oh, no no. The 'gtfo' was in jest for your grammar.

It's good not to feed the trolls, although occasionally it's fun to see how far they can go.

In any case, I try to be helpful, since I did get a lot of information from this forum a couple (2?) years ago.

oh true, yeah alot of what iv learned about djing has come from these forums and from questions asked, how else u supposed to learn rite.

In a nutshell, you mix (play) two or more songs at the same time. They can be from any artist or your own. You usually do it in front of a live crowd.

You make your own music in a recording studio. Most people start with home studios.

Jooo is da suxxor becorse joo has di poor grammer...! :P

I would forgive you except you also spelt grammar wrong he he, but you know I'm just messing with you.
Hell, I actually wish people on this forum would realise that not everyone here has English as a first language and the majority of people who are writing in that situation will sometimes have better written English than native English speakers... But either way, I agree with you. Don't let people get on your case because of the way you write.

Heya Spooky Sounds,

Welcome aboard!
Sure as some people have said this place is full of people with opinions, afterall that is what a forum is about.

But what is always funny is that the people with nothing to say are usually the first ones to attack a thread starter, and the time and energy that these types expend on telling someone that their question is retarded, they could have answer a handfull of questions with an intelligent answer and made this place a cool place to be.

Welcome to the world of DJing and Dance music, one that will definately leave you with a lot of questions.

Something that I didn't see mentioned in the thread is the fact that the majority of DJs out there are also producers. These days it kind of goes hand in hand.

A DJ is primarily playing a mix of other peoples music and sometimes their own and is focusing on what people are dancing to.
Although the DJ is playing other peoples music, do not fall into the trap of thinking that it's easy. You have to have a good understanding of the music you are playing, be able to pay attention to what the dance floor is doing, make sure that you are playing the right music for the right time in the night and so on.
This of course is just skimming the surface but it's a start.

A producer is responsible for making the music that the DJs play.
This is where the learning curve greatly increases. Trance producers will essentially not just be song writers but will often do their own sound engineering too. Whilst it's all acheivable and can be learned to a greater or lesser degree by most, this is something that will take up a lot of your time and much dedication.
You might want to have a read up in the production forums although I would perhaps waiting with questions until you have something definate as a lot of people there can be infinately more hostile than in this forum.

As I stated, DJs often produce so will often do both parts.

DJing is a lot of fun so I would definately recomend you go and watch some DJs play. But be aware that there are many different levels so watch with an open mind.
Also check out Youtube for vids to get an idea.

Let me know if you have any questions and I would be more than happy to try and answer.

Cheers

Cool. So yea, that's kind of what I want to do, both mixing and producing. So I guess I should start by making two cool small songs (simple) and then just mix them together? I know I'm making it sound simple, but maybe it's because I've already written alot of songs for guitar and I have this one song I made up in my head (trance, not rock) but just don't know how to make it, lol. It has like a strange guitar chords mixed in with a trance beat with some midi keyboard sounds.

As for seeing real live DJ's, I see DJ's 3 times every week at the place I work at. See my cousin knows the owner so he just lets me work as bartender seeing as I'm better than most of his 40 yr olds yet I am underage...nobody asks questions though..lol.

Also, you are right, I like upbeat trance, whatever, crucify me...

Ho 17 anni, xkè? Posso entrare?

I will try and go. Most likely will...if I'm let in.

Ah, 'naltra cosa, conosco un amico che era molto amico di Gabriele Sandri (DJ Sandri), e stavo appunto di entrare nel mondo DJ, loro volevano insegnarmi come fare tutto, ma...

Also remember to give yourself a lot of time to learn either DJ mixing or producing, or both. They both take a lot of time to learn all the stuff.

about the MIDI keyboard:

"The basic MIDI keyboard does not produce sound. Instead, MIDI information is sent to an electronic module capable of reproducing an array of digital sounds or samples that resemble traditional analog musical instruments. These samples are also referred to as voices."

-Wikipedia.

Ok, so I need a MIDI keyboard and one of those modules?
Inertia
ok, dude. simply put, you have a computer with something that generates sound in it (a softsynth, meaning software synthesizer, it is a program that generates [or synthesizes] sounds and allows you to tweak it based on different parameters to change this sound into what you want) and then your MIDI keyboard, probably connected to your PC via USB cable will then send the program tone information.

a melody is made up of a progression of different notes. higher, or lower. you must know this because you mentioned having a music background. your synthesized sound will then be played back at you at higher and lower pitch, creating a melody. think of it as playing piano, only you don't have a real piano sound, you get to choose and create the sound it is going to play, but you can control it like it is a piano.

normally, software comes in packages. the packages normally contain:

- softsynths (to generate sound)
- drum machines or drum samples (for.... eh... drumming)
- samplers (to arrange small bits, like say, you record someone playing the drums, you can then seperate it into kicks, snares, and such, and create a sequence with it)
- sequencer (this is what you use to make an arrangement. first 4 bars with drums, then drums + bass, then add melody, and such, this is done in the sequencer)
- effects (to tweak your )

now, sound synthesis, MAKING your own sound is a lot more complicated and is a very deep subject. if you're interested, i suggest you google 'How to Make a Noise', it's a free book that guides you through the process. however, i do recommend you get to poking a production program first.

FLStudio is great, don't believe the bull some people say about it. i personally know great producers signed to very high profile labels that use nothing but FL.

on another note, one which no one has touched on, you can also choose to not be a DJ, and only be a producer, but to play your music live. it's called live PA. after you get good at producing, and you have enough material (at least about 2 hours of your own music) you can develop a liveshow, and basically give a real EDM concert.

the_gamemaster
I don't think you actually need a MIDI keyboard, but i presume it makes producing a lot easier.

I like how one legitimate question and 1 joke are somehow "trolls" and "people with nothing to say".

I'm happy to give out tips and share experiences, but it really irks me when people don't even make a minimum effort to figure some basics out on their own. If every single new DJ came in here and wanted a complete explanation on all things DJing starting from 0, this would not be a very interesting forum. Perhaps we should make a "starting points for beginners" post and sticky it...
