I'm happy to give out tips and share experiences, but it really irks me when people don't even make a minimum effort to figure some basics out on their own. Two things: How can you know I didn't look for help by myself in the 1st place. I actually did, and nothing. I hate forums (for some obvious reasons, aka, s) and this was one of the last things I'd try to do before anything.
Second, your sig quote pretty much tells me what kind of person you are.

now, sound synthesis, MAKING your own sound is a lot more complicated and is a very deep subject. if you're interested, i suggest you google 'How to Make a Noise', it's a free book that guides you through the process. however, i do recommend you get to poking a production program first.
FLStudio is great, don't believe the bull some people say about it. i personally know great producers signed to very high profile labels that use nothing but FL.
on another note, one which no one has touched on, you can also choose to not be a DJ, and only be a producer, but to play your music live. it's called live PA. after you get good at producing, and you have enough material (at least about 2 hours of your own music) you can develop a liveshow, and basically give a real EDM concert. |
That's some cool info. I assume FLStudio isn't free, so I'll have to save some cash after my trip to NY, but since I'll be there visiting some friends, I'll make sure I talk with some DJ's. One of my friend's friend has a DJ set up and I'd like to try out mixing some stuff.
I didn't get the sequencer part though, especially the bars bit. Care to explain? or would it be alot easier to understand if I had the program right infront of me? |

You looked and found NOTHING?
How do you think the rest of us figured it out? I READ the forums for months before starting to ask questions, to avoid being as ridiculously vague as "how do you DJ?".
Even a quick google search reveals hundreds of pages of tips, tutorials and videos.

Aw man! After I got back from work at 4 AM (I don't have school for winter vacation) I tried out FLStudio7. What an amazing experience! hahaha, call me dumb or whatever, but I started doing some random stuff with a beat that idk how I made and my gf and my cousin said it was actually fairly good. Still not close to anything at all though, because I have no idea how to repeat what I did.
I'm definitely getting the real version of this program and making some songs to put up here. Let's see wut u think.
Also, I badly need a MIDI keyboard. The only "notes" that fit together seemed to be the ones played with "I" "O" "P" and "U" or some of those with a PC keyboard. I even did the "Stormy Skies" part starting at around 1:13 of the new PvD CD (In Between).
Awesome, lol. Now I just need the gear, more practice, and some tips from the pros. |

FL is great. but don't get married to it right away. try out other packages before deciding.
you can mostly find demo versions online.

| oh, and you don't NEED a midi keyboard, but it does make stuff easier, as mentioned. i threw it in there seeing as you have a background in music, working your way around production will probably be easier if you have something like a normal musical instrument in front of you. |

Ya, definitely will. I just made one cool rythem with the lightspeed thingie. The other from last nite sounded good because we were probably drunk and rly tired, haha.

You WORKED at a club where you could of taken a break or come on your day off to see what's it like, but yet you decide to hop on TA and post on the forums which you insist was one of your last options. If your friend has DJ equipment, I would think he would show you what it's all about, unless he's weird or something.

Right, I did say I worked at a club, which I did say that the DJ's left before I finished working or I left before cuz I had school the next day. On a day off? Some people are actually busy and have more of a life than others. Maybe u don't understand the concept of being 17 and living pretty much alone (with my 23 yr old cousin). I clearly don't HAVE free time, otherwise I would be working! I have to A) Go to school B) Do homework and projects C) Be with my gf and D) go to football practices (soccer). Also, I said my friend when I used to live in NY did have a DJ equipment, but we always ended up playing guitar and drums when I went over. I wasn't into trance as much as I am now, anyways.
Also, u guys take this as an insult, I mean...wut's the fun of a place where everyone knows how to do everything?
Oh PS: Now that I'm on vacation and my football season is on a break, I CAN go on a day off. |
