You're thinking too narrowly... if it exceeds escape velocity it won't come down on earth, true; however, given the near infinate massive bodies in the universe and the fact that the craft will continue to travel until such time as it strikes something it is certain that the craft will enter the gravitational field of some object and eventually strike it thus it will have "come down."

It was meant to be a smart ass comment, nothing more :wtf: oh well. What goes up and comes down on the same planet is different from what goes up from one planet and comes down on some other. The former case roughly indicates conservation of energy in the most obvious sense. In the later case, it's not as obvious. The object may accelerate and gain energy due to various phenomena through its journey (gravity assist, impact with some other object etc). Eventually when it lands on the other planet, it would probably return the energy it gained/lost during its intergalactic course and not the energy it was given when it escaped this planet. That being said, there's always the possibility that the object may continue to revolve around some other body like a satellite (may not necessarily crash down. Our moon is actually moving away from earth) , or may not come under the gravitational force of any object whatsoever to influence its path. Although Universe contains infinite massive bodies, universe itself is infinite.

Of course our entire galaxy is moving toward it's centre and if nothing else everything will come down to the galactic black hole.

his first device flew off into the sky and was lost forever.
