Accent Database: Hear and be heard!

Fellow Coreans,

One of the most amazing things about TA is its diversity. Here we can find people from several different countries, continents and - judging by some users' cognitive abilities - planets. Wouldn't it be nice to do something constructive with all this diversity? Wouldn't it be awesome to know more about posters from other areas?

Personally, I've been thinking of building an "Accent Database" (can anyone think of a better name?) similar to Voices, but with very simple rules:

  1. Recordings should be, at least, 1 minute long (and, at most, 3 minutes long). MP3, mono, 64kbps (I'm posting a tutorial later this week, in case you don't know how to encode mp3 files).

  2. Participants should all tell a story: It can be either funny (like that day you farted in class and you blamed that fat kid) or dramatic (remember that day you almost died? Tell us about it!).

  3. All entries should be anonymous: Sure, we need some background info so we know you're a 24 year old female from Toronto, but we don't really need to know your name.

The goal is to show the variety of dialects that exist in English and, depending on our success, I think it would also be nice to extend this project to different languages as well. There are several regional forums, after all, shouldn't be that hard :p

Anyway, before we carry on with this project, I'd like to know a few things:

  1. Who's willing to participate as a speaker?
  2. Who can help with the programming? (I'm thinking of using mainly PHP and MySQL) - I'm going to contact Swamper later regarding the server, depending on the results.
  3. Does anyone else here study linguistics?

Edit: Oh, I changed the title because I just realised it needn't be restricted to TA's... the more people, the better, I guess :)

as said to you previously, i'll see if I can rustle something up, although I'm lacking a mic at the moment. It'll be hard to be anonymous tho. i mean whilst there's loadsa people who can fit into s ay "female, toronto" there's not so many who can fit into "male, england" without people knowing who we are

My idea would also be for one familiar sentence to be spoken too, to compare how we say words like vehicle, about, and other stuff. I know for example that people from my area have a few traits (like not saying the letter H or saying buzz for bus)

Just shut up and do it Ian.

Sounds like a very interesting idea for a website, and I'd be interested in the programming side of things but I'm a bit busy now... and there's probably some people here with a little more experience
