Not many people knew Chernobyl happened for more than 2 weeks, until Poland and Finland started asking questions and why their radiation levels were through the roof and USSR had to admit a disaster happened.
We lived about 5 miles away from military airbase that was used to haul huge bags of lead that would be dropped on the reactor. I saw about 30 heli drops run over my house every day for several months.

generally, people to the south are basically unaffected due to the wind direction at the time of the accident. something like 75% (i could have the wrong number) of the radioactive dust went north into belarus. the majority of what is left of that is/was around the 10km exclusion zone of the power plant.
