At larger universities, you apply to the specific college (sub-division of the university) you wish to study in - so the Business School, Engineering School, School of Arts & Sciences, etc. At most of the big schools class sizes will be very large, and will break apart into smaller components for discussions led by graduate students.
Smaller schools are completely different. Many are liberal arts-oriented, meaning they focus on breadth and not depth of curriculum, allowing more flexibility to explore a wide variety of academic subjects and topics. You'll see more variance both within a major and within the overall curriculum as well. Class sizes are typically very small (at my school the average class size was under 20 and I never had a class over 35), and more discussion-based with the professor rather than lecture-based. Usually, though not always, there is less research focus at a smaller university since they won't typically have the same resources as a big publicly-funded school.
There is a lot of debate over which style is better - specificity and research vs. breadth of knowledge and critical thinking process. I'm a big fan of the liberal arts education in the US, but I know other people that have compelling arguments for why the big research institutions are better. Comes down to personal preference and learning style I suppose. |

In Oz you get a mark out of 20 for 5 subjects in college, to give you a score out of 100. that's your tertiary entrance score that you use to apply to universities. different unis/courses have different minimum entry scores.
as for what its like IN the universities, it really does depend on the degree and institution.
come study in australia lira, you'd love it here! there are so many cute eastern ladies ;) |
