audio interface help

I have two KRK RP6 monitors and I need help selecting an audio interface because I am ready to hear them. I use a dell desktop with XP, and a dell laptop with vista, both firewire.

I was thinking the Presonus Firebox or Echo Audiofire4, I have researched the tweak site, etc. etc. I am reluctant to go with PCI because I am running very low on space in the computer, but keep in mind the option is still there though. I would like it to be able to use mostly onto my desktop, but I would like to be able to run it on my laptop as well.

I am looking for more experienced and knowledgeable peoples advice. The 200-325$ price range is very ideal for me!

Much thanks for your help.

echo? haha why, can u explain?

you will be happy with either really, they're both pretty much the same. alot of people are chosing echo nowdays though, because they have a stellar reputation for really low latency drivers. the ADC/DAC is also better.

echo also offer a lot more options in the firewire line, which is probably the main reason for their popularity. presonus only really have two cards that are of use the EDM producers (Inspire & Firebox). The other card (FireStudio or w/e) comes weighed down with too many preamps that most of us don't need. With Echo you have a choice between the AudioFire 2, 4, 8 and 12...

I can vouch for the Firebox. It's an absolute beast.

if you can get away with protools m-powered, i would use that instead. m-audio interfaces are pretty low quality, but they are definately better than the packaged protools ones. the mbox cards are really horrible value. you would definately not buy one if you weren't using protools.

When you're a beginner, onboard sound is fine. The main problems with onboard sound are:
1. Performance
2. Bad DAC - you're not hearing what you're producing accurately

Thanks echo. i owe you a slab of greens!

Macs certainly have pretty decent onboard sound (generally) compared to non-macs so you should be fine at the beginning.
