Cops Probe Alleged Sexual Assault In 'Clubland' Elevator
Wednesday January 2, 2008
CityNews.ca Staff
Toronto Police are probing an alleged sexual assault that took place just minutes into 2008.

It's been reported that around 12:30am on Jan. 1 a 27-year-old woman was approached by two men, who led her to the rear entrance of a building located at 140 Simcoe St.

From there she allegedly entered an elevator inside the building, where she was sexually assaulted. The suspects were last seen exiting the elevator inside the Simcoe St. address, though which floor they left on isn't known.

The suspects are described as:

Suspect #1:

male, possibly Sri Lankan or Middle Eastern descent,
18-24, 5'8", medium build,
dark, short, brown hair, and clean-shaven.
He was wearing a brown jacket and brown pants.
Suspect #2:

male, possibly Sri Lankan or Middle Eastern descent,
20-25, 5'7"- 5'9", 140 - 150 lbs.
He was wearing a dark-blue pinstripe suit and a light-blue hat.
Anyone with information about either of these suspects should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

my question is why the journalist refers to the entertainment district at all.

WTF does someone getting sexual assaulted in an elevator have to do with "clubland"?

completely irrelevant, from the info provided in the story...but it "sounds good" from a news standpoint.

There really needs to be some sort of unified business association for the clubs, restaurants, etc. in the area to represent common interests. If there already is one, its voice isn't nearly loud enough.

All of those businesses have a very real interest in the area not being marginalized by this sort of nonsense reporting, IMHO. (unless this *is* related to a club/bar, but that's not indicated in the story).

Seriously? I can just imagine what the cops were thinking when she told them her story...

Reminds me of this time I was heading home, around 3 or 4 am...I was walking along Richmond and looked up this dark, sketchy alley that connects to Adelaide. Sure as , there's this 20-something girl in her microskirt, halter and heels, iPod in her ears, stumbling up the alley while playing with her phone - obviously out of her head. I actually followed her through the alley (which I wouldn't usually walk through alone in broad daylight) until she got in a cab on Adelaide to make sure she didn't get robbed/raped/both. This girl was smokin'...I mean she was some creep's absolute wet dream when she wandered into that alley.

The number of times I've seen this stuff, it astounds me that more girls aren't getting attacked or just disappearing. Where were her friends? Where was her common sense? Seriously, If I was some random scumbag and I saw her in that position, there would have been no trace of her.

Scary.

140 Simcoe St is the corner of Richmond and Simcoe. It's a condo, but it's right in the club district.

I know where it is...but was this girl at a club/bar? followed from one? were these guys at a club/bar or simply targeting that condo?

i.e. why report this as a sexual assault "in clubland" if a club/bar had nothing to do with it?

it's poor reporting, as many will see an implication is that it's yet another incident in the oh-so-dangerous entertainment district as opposed to a sexual assault in a residencial building.

lame catchy headline.
