IMO technically there should be no difference, but there does seem to be. Upscaling DVDs is the same thing as watching small movies on your computer, where the resolution is always very high.

It should not work for the same reason CSI is complete bull "zoom and enhance". You cannot just create quality by changing the resolution at which it is displayed.

That being said, when I watch DVD's on my DVD player (with component output), and then watch it on my Xbox which upscales (720p), it looks better on the Xbox. I partly attribute that to the Xbox having a better signal processor, because it has an actual video card, with better capabilities, and more colours.

So in the end, I think they are just putting better processors in the stand alone DVD players. I don't think the upscaling really has an effect, because your source (the DVD) is the same smaller resolution. Zooming should not make a bit of difference.

yep its better processors and algorithms, the source is the same obviously like you say.

There's some software available on pc to explode images to higer resolution and the quality is still there. Very impressive.

Maybe my question wasn't clear. I wanted to know if there is a noticeable difference between watching a blu-ray DVD and a regular DVD (on an upscaling DVD player).

Is the picture THAT much better on blu-ray?

Most definitely, for people who look/care or are observant. Some people may not, because they just do not care.

Same difference as a poorly encoded mp3, compared to a 320kbps version, on good speakers. Some people just do not care, but to some of us the increased quality jumps out right away.

No question at all.

Honestly, I can barely tell the difference between DVD& Upconverted DVD. There is some slight difference, but no where near what is achieved via an HD Format.

So maybe I need a blu-ray player now, lol.
