Anyone still do this for getting around a region or even a continent? Wish to share your stories (if any), as well as advice to anyone using one of these crazy methods of transportation?
Hope for this to be a funny thread. ;-) |

I used to use buses alot for transport.
They're ok but for long journeys I have been known to fall asleep.
I can't help it that I can get comfy. |

Yup, I do sometimes. Music( must must must have), books( if you can read in a moving vehicle ), paper and something to write with is good too. I normally take the bus when I go back home to Montreal and I listen to music, try and get comfy as much as I can and usually fall asleep or write a lot. Try and not get anyone sit beside you. When they are filling up the bus, try and get near the back, and sit on the outer seat until they are done filling it up. It might give the illusion that there is someone with you.
I've been lucky enough not to have someone sit beside me so I can stretch out and get more comfy, minus one time. I had some old smelly man sit beside me and he ended up drooling all down his shirt so I wiped it for him in fear of him leaning over and getting it on me. *shiver* |

| Busses are way too cramped for me. Plus I have mild claustrophobic tendencies. The most I can do is an hour with a window seat or 30 minutes without the window seat. I much prefer car rides, that I can do 20+ hours. |

I took a 33 hr bus ride from Poland to Greece. It was a bit crazy, with lots of stops, and a nice blanket between my and my bf at the time lol
music and books were a must, but also a pillow.
Other than that, we were grateful that we had movies, and air conditioning. :) |

when i was travelling in Greece we had a huge tour-type bus for about 15 people. it was really nice - brand new, cushy seats, good ventilation, clean windows, etc... normally i hate traveling on buses, but i didn't mind it that time.
there was a really interesting story on NPR last year that was done by a guy who was traveling up and down the West Coast by Greyhound Bus. he interviewed a few people (an older pot-smoking hippie who invented his own religion, a woman who was going to visit her husband in prison, a woman who predicted his future for $10, etc) but mostly told his own account of what he experienced and who he met while traveling by bus. unfortunately i can't find a transcript of it, but it was awesome. |

Yeah, but phobias aren't logical. :p
See, a car has a huge window in front, a huge window in the back, windows on both sides, alot more leg room, and the possibility to stop and get out whenever you want. So yes, in terms of physical space they're smaller, but also more "open". I don't feel trapped in a car like I do in a bus. |

In Croatia buses are usual way of travelling because it's a small country.
Also, plane tickets are rather expensive.
I travelled via bus twice last year, first time being 11.5 hour trip to seaside and second time being 11 hour trip to Prague. |

| I would rather rot in hell then take a public bus. Or better yet, walk... |

Small country + winding mountain roads = bus rides 3x longer than you would expect. Took something like 9 hours to get from Dubrovnik up to Zadar even though its only 300km or so. Whenever I got bored though I just looked out the window - the dalmatian coast is easily one of the most visually stunning road trips I've ever been on. |
