I had the chance to play with the Waves L3 Ultramaximizer yesterday. I decided to do a comparison between the L3 and BuzMaxi3 (a freeware maximizer that I use).
I was surprised by the results. They sound very similar.
Can you guess which sample is which?

I used the same settings for both. +10dB gain (the unmastered track peaks at -3.2dB) and -0.3dB ceiling.
You can download BuzMaxi3 here: http://www.x-buz.com/BuzMaxi3.html
It's quite good. Just ignore that it says "hello kitty" on the GUI. :D |

| I'd guess that sample no 1 is the L3 (and I almost hope so, cause it sounds a little bit better than sample no 2) |

| My guess is master 1 too.. It had imo a better clarity. (Listeing with koss porta pro - cheap stuff) |

It's hard to tell by listening to an mp3 (terrible format for critical listening, btw) on my crappy little harmon/kardon 2.1 speakers on my work computer, but I'll play along. The first sample seemed to have a little more warmth, almost as if the sound of the original was colored by the limiter. Since I've never known my Waves to impart a 'sound' on my recordings, I would guess that the first sample is the BuzMaxi. The second one sounded a little brighter to my ears, as if the transients hadn't been tamed as much, so I'd guess that's the L3.
Do we win a prize if we're correct? :toocool: |

only listened on my notebook speakers but imho the master 2 sounded better as there is less pumping effect.
but don't know which should be which one. though most mastering engineers prefer the L2 over the L3.
i use the sonnox limiter (imho better than any wave limiter) - it's worth a try. |

| pro studios and engineers use L3 and the other Waves bundles for a pretty good reason. |

yeah... because everyone else uses them...
waves are very outdated now. they are ok, but there are much better plugins out there (sonnox, sonalksis, etc.). |

believe what you want. You don't have guys like Roger Nichols and Mike Sokol using Waves because anyone else is. |

Wow, don't take it so seriously. It was hardly a scientific test, just a rough comparison.
Sample one is BuzMaxi3 and sample two is the L3.
The L3 may be better, but BuzMaxi3 sounds great for being free. |
