keep in mind though if you don't have a ton of money there are still lots of parties you can go to. As it gets closer more shows will come out with $5, $10, $20 entrance. Sure, it won't be at Space and it won't be PVD but you can still do some great shows for less money.
Drinking before the club helps a lot too, or bringing a flask/bottle in, as cheesy as that sounds, it helps. Last year was my 4th time and i'm still learning, but it was easily my most flexible financial year. Well, until this year. But yeah, pretty double what you expect. I drive down from St. Petersburg so I have a car to drive myself around. I have found it to be very easy to get around in my car. Lots of good back roads and things to get around sobe.
last year
Wed night - Lawler Lights Out - ticket was $40, only bought water at $5 each. Left the club at 8am.
Thurs - checked into my hotel, got a steak and cheese at a local place with a beer and spent $10. Went to a record label party for free(got on the list), bought a Bicardi Limon/Sprite for $14, bought one more but also had my own bottle with me to compliment the rest of hte night. After that I met up wtih some friends and was in line to get into some club to see some DJ (lol) and they closed the place down. Luckily I hadn't paid yet. After that we just walked around since it was about 4 and I hadn't slept in 2 days.
Friday - I usually bring breakfast food with me (crackers, pop tarts, granola bars, etc) so thats what i had when I woke up. Had subway in the afternoon and then went to Ultra day 1. Planned on going to Digitalism after Ultra ($25) but we were all exhausted and ended up at THe Marlin for the Hallucination party (only $5 to get in) and a few drinks there... then we just got food at this little stand on a side street someone else mentioned. it was SO GOOD. anyways, should have spent more that night but we didn't.
Saturday - went to breakfast, went to Ultra, bought lunch at ultra.. the rain dampened our plans for after Ultra and we ended up just driving back to my friends place in Naples straight from Ultra instead of going out. I usually don't get the hotel for Saturday night because i just go out after Ultra and then crash with a friend of drive home instead of sleeping for 2 hours before checkout.

so my hotel was only thurs/fri night (because wednesday was at Lights Out until 8am, then the beach until check-in time).
hotel (thurs/fri) $375
entrance fees $200 (including Ultra 2 days)
food $50
gas $60
drinks $200

and thats about it. It should have been higher, and reading back it doesn't seem like I did much but damn, it sure felt like I did A LOT. I only slept about 8 hours that whole time...

ive never heard of cab drivers charging $60 from downtown to the beach...i dont doubt that it happens but last year all the night events i went to were in downtown...and the cab ride from south beach to space/downtown was $20 which included the tip each way...so $40 roundtrip which if u have 3-4 people in the cab really isnt bad.

U can buy tokens at this Pharmacy on washington for the bus

the bus system isnt bad in miami, but it is kinda crappy. expect to wait at bus stations and its by no means 24 hours. i do think there is a late night owl bus that runs from downtown to miami beach but it only runs once an hour and i have no idea where those bus stops are.

it is easy though to take a bus from miami beach to downtown (if you're going to space, noc, pawn shop, etc). the buses up until maybe midnight still run pretty often.

easy rundown for some people who want to take the bus...
from washington ave. take the 'C Downtown Miami', 'K Downtown Miami' or '51 Flager Max' to the Omni bus terminal, get off there and jump on the Metro Mover (free i believe but i dunno until what time it runs) and then take that to Space. its only like 1 or 2 stops on the metro mover so its very easy.
if you're one alton rd, you can take the 'S Downtown Miami' to the Omni bus terminal.

the buses are only $1.50 one way and you dont need tokens, although you can buy them, but you dont save any money. buses do not give change though, so beware of that.

on miami beach, theres a 'South Beach Local' bus which will take you around miami beach for only $0.25 and runs really often.

ill try to get some maps and schedules or something up for some of those interested in using the miami bus system.

i like this everyone helping everyone out thing.
The first year I went down by myself to meet up with people (instead of going with people) I lost my hotel at the last minute, didn't know where to eat, didn't know anything. Now I am much more versed in what to do but for those of you that don't know, this stuff is awesome.
Just try not to think about the amount of money. If you build it up over time its like nothing! I have had a jar that I have been sticking $10, $20 in for the last few months just for extra spending cash.
I have a paper on my cubicle wall at work with all my bills from now through April, and any other expenses I think I will have ($20 in gas a week, $25 in food a week, etc), plus Ultra ticket cost, hotel cost, etc. Then next to that I add up all my paychecks from now until then. Each week I pay bills, buy this and this, I cross them off the list and redo it with the new amounts. This really has helped me the last few years to keep everything together and allows me to see where to cut corners, not just say "yeah i'll pay stuff and save some money and hopefully it will work out". This way I know I will be set come March.
Plus budgeting my vacation while getting paid at work is great too.
