Sorry but anyone who likes "techno, moody tech-house and trippy minimal" should find favor in the Sabres of Paradise, harbingers of some of those very sounds (do seek out Andrew Weatherall). ;) It's not entirely irrelevant when the tune in question is arguably inspirational and influential to this day: http://www.discogs.com/release/35245 Hell, the biggest minimal enthusiast I know (the well regarded producer Maetrik) has this tune in his top 10 of all time.

Thanks for the fanboy accusation claim, by the way, Quadlow, but I was hoping the new WOW stuff would impress for its musicality alone, regardless if it fit snugly into your particular sub-genre preference (also, Jody has been no stranger to trippy and even dabbles in minimal, which is why I hate to see sub-genre walls being erected when referencing any one DJ who commonly mixes it up, one of his fave tracks of all time being Luke Slater's "Love"). The fact that it doesn't in the least bit impress (coupled with me having not heard any of the new material barring one demo) is a cause for concern for me since I have great expectations. Hence, my "fanboy" response.

You really seem very comfortable telling people what they "should" like, huh?

Unfortunately, none of that matters to anyone. No one is erecting any "sub genre walls" - they just don't like what you do. Not everyone will, deal with it. No amount of dance music references you cite as "evidence" in favor of your position will ever change that.

Edit: And I'll say this much, having Way out West as your favorite artist and http://www.wowest.cc/ in your profile isn't exactly helping your "I'm not a WoW fanboy" case. You're clearly entitled to your own opinion/tastes/standards - but that's all it is or ever will be - opinion, same as anyone else here.

I will say that I felt like I was somewhere different for about a 30 min groove of his set (Fabric perhaps although i've never been) b/c it was like this funky azz banging house that penetrated your body and made me dance like a motherf*

The music speaks for itself...there's no accounting for taste.

Excuse me but I like multiple facets of music (I'm even a fan of some of the artists in Quadlow's list) (with the exception of death metal, gabber, happy hardcore, candy pop, euro trance and most country...you know, the vapid, fluffy, lowest common denominator stuff), so please don't try to pigeonhole my own tastes. It seems you're implying that all of what I do like (rock, jazz, folk, ambient, most all facets of house, dub/downtempo, techno, breaks, dnb, IDM, etc.) is not appreciated by anyone but myself. If we don't deem any of the great releases from the past as being significant milestones, how would anyone know where we've been? It would just be a massive pile of faceless music that nobody can identify with because "I don't care for that subgenre." This whole movement started out by NOT being divisive. In the early 90s, techno and house were all anybody knew. The trend to divide and conquer hasn't done this movement any favors.

Did I not already admit I have high expectations for the new WOW material? That would imply I'm some sort of fan...but the derogatory "fanboy" remarks have always left me cold. My great appreciation isn't just born out of some blind fanaticism as "fanboy" implies but instead being continually bombarded by their sounds from the 90s when I least expected it. On each occasion, I would move on but a couple years later, a new production would make itself known courtesy of the radio, club event or vinyl sampling at the record store. I eventually stopped ignoring and made it a mission to collect everything and help make a fansite (as outdated as it is, see if you can find any other source for WOW on the web...there isn't one besides Myspace). I like to see musicians/producers/performers who take pride in their work succeed, and are in this industry beyond the glitz and glory of being the world's greatest DJ or topping the album/single charts for that particular week. For that reason, I'm glad Quadlow gave this artist the benefit of the doubt and attended the show in spite of his disinterest in the perceived style. I would just hope that someone with an ear for music could appreciate the effort and passion that it takes to make a moving and competent composition...even if it may not be as quirky as hoped. And since you're *not* picking up on it, RJT, again, *that* was my main disappointment, to witness such a lukewarm response to the new material, which I have not yet heard and which I'm hoping at least lives up in quality to their contributions of the past. Do you want me to apologize for that?

I don't like everything Jody plays...some of it I can damn well do without...but my main concern is with the new WOW productions, the last actual release being 4 years old (so the expectations are naturally high). With the way a production from the trance-by-numbers producers gets universally praised here, I'm sorry if I appear to be excessively prying when I'm looking for a response beyond someone's preference of "techno, moody tech-house and trippy minimal" as to what's wrong with the new material, as *I* like those above genres as well!

I really, really would like you to show me where I pigeonhole your tastes as well as where I say that no one other than you appreciates the music you enjoy.

I'm really not sure what any of that even means. Are you trying to say that anything that is a "milestone" record is so objectively? So all of us absolutely must respect them?

So once again you're saying that just because you think something is brilliant and produced with passion, other people have to respect it. And hey look, I managed to summarize in one sentence what it took you an entire poorly written paragraph to crank out.

No one owes you an explanation of anything.

If someone doesn't like something, they don't like it. Deal with it.

And finally....

one last thought on the evening... one of tunes he was dropped I thought was a remix/mash up of Billy Ocean - When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going

it wasn't however and when I ran up to ask him what it was it was a new WOW tune. Just one of the pads/synths sounded exactly like the hook in the Billy Ocean song so I was a bit thrown off. You're probably thinking Billy Ocean, wtf? Well, Jewel of The Nile was the first movie I've ever seen in a theater (1985) and that song was in the soundtrack. It was ingrained into my head during the movie for some reason...
