There isn't much chance I ever even see this professor again, much less have any interaction with him, and I have far more than enough references right now that adding a professor I had for 13 days one winter break in January isn't exactly one I'm looking to add to the resume.

I agree that there are times when you get more than you thought you could out of a class - but this wasn't one of them. This was one of those "keep your head down and power through it to graduate" kind of courses.

Also, I don't know if you've noticed on here - but the number of people whose opinion of me I care about is relatively small. There wasn't really ever a chance of this professor being added to it.

I decided to stop after I received my associates which means jack nowadays. RJT, good by the way, that's how you stick it to the white man.

Getting a job is the only possible motive one could have for going to college, of course.

Oh, and partying. :gsmile:

Are you trying to say that you honestly found every class you were compelled to take in order to receive your degree worthwhile?

Nah. I'm actually in favor of doing away with "core curriculum" style arrangements that require you to take courses outside your major. That would really reduce the number of bored and apathetic people slowing everyone else down. But of course, a certain number of people also only take their major because it will get them a high-paying job. Which is fine. You have to pay the bills somehow. But I'd rather be in a school where those types didn't exist.

Another interesting arrangement would be to keep all grades secret until graduation time.

I'd like to see how all the letter-hunters reacted to that one. :haha:

Rob could you have gotten an A with a better final exam grade?

Personally, I finish everything like I need to get a 100 in order to pass. I think for me it's 1. a courtesy to the professor because he/she puts a lot of effort into these things (which I understand now that Im teaching), 2. the fulfillment of having completed a course to the best of my ability and 3. a professor isnt just a professor. At our schooling level they become contacts, references, and may eventually be colleagues. And at the very least, they know my character, and they talk. So, I guess that's why I treat their courses the way I do.

I can understand that everyone's situation isnt like mine. Im in a very small science field where everyone knows everyone and character makes a difference. Im sure there are plenty of courses and degrees where "reputation as a student" really isnt going to matter.

If youre okay with what you got, and how you got it, then I say dont even worry about it.

Yes, but as I said before the "A" wouldn't have counted in my final GPA so really all that mattered (as far as records are concerned) is my "pass/fail" status.

And this was a lecture of 100 kids - and with a professor who I wouldn't use as a contact for anything, so I'm generally not worried about it at all.

I just wonder what drives professors who are clearly both bored and apathetic with what they're doing to assume that they're students wouldn't react the same way?

Sounds alright to me, Rob.

Clearly, if you were able to get a B in the class with only a 4% on the final then obviously you've mastered the material in the manner which the prof intended. I could maybe see where he could be upset if the final wasn't cumulative (I assume it was?) and had some material on it not covered by previous exams, but ultimately, I don't see how he could really hold that against you.

College is not high school, the education you receive is entirely voluntary. The prof should realize this. If you managed to get a good grade in his course despite not doing what he wanted you to do, then its really his problem for designing the course that way, not yours.
