Yes.
Forgive my pessimism, but 9 out of 10 star wars themed games are terrible, and that includes 100% of star wars themed games that use original movie material and characters. Combined with the current trend of videogames getting crappier and crappier and being all show and no substance, plus dumbed down gameplay for the console market...
Needless to say I'm gonna keep following the devellopement but I'd be very surprised if it comes any close to living up to the hype. |
But you said:

...which isn't really true at all. What they're doing with the physics engines in this game is something that really hasn't been done before - hence my asking if you had even watched the video.
Also, while I'd agree that the vast majority of Star Wars games are - they're hardly batting 100%. |

No what I said is all the star wars game that weren't were the ones who only vaguely referenced the movies and created their own set of characters, their own art, their own music... Ex; Tie fighter, Kotor, JK, XWA (except the ty death star missions).
And yeah sure there's some new fancy physics engine, but it's not that innovative. Moving object physics and smart materials have all been done before, but they're making it sound like it's the best thing since sliced bread, which leads me to believe they really don't have anything interresting to say about the game itself. |

I guess I'm just far more impressed by it than you then, because I haven't ever seen a game in which the environments look to be function as they do in TFU. Sure, I've seen versions of all three engines they're using before, but not that reacted with the same level of intricacy as they appear to in this - and I've certainly not seen a game that incorporates all three in any meaningful way. |

I believe this game is set for PS3, 360, and PC. PSP and DS versions may follow suit but they will obviously be different games. Havent heard word on a Wii version but its possible too. |
as far as i know its on all of the above except pc.... :(
project-k: not bagging you or anything but what other games out there have done these kind of things with simulation based physics before? |

doesn't matter b/c it will still sell like hotcakes.
but i'm on prject-k's side. will have to wait to see if it's another boring star wars game cashing in on it's license.
the video did look sexy though. |

well havok IS the half life physics system...
but i also imagine almost none of you played jedi knight - outcast, which was an extremely enjoyable and robust game from about five years ago.
this just seems like an even more involving and fleshed out version of that. and if it meets those standards, it will be a great game

I own it, have since it came out - terrific game, just like Dark Forces, KOTOR, the first Jedi Knight, Shadows of the Empire, etc. The Star Wars franchise has certainly had its share of games, but it's also created some of my favorites.
And as far as this continued "it's just the HL2 physics engine" nonsense - no one is denying that, but the other two engines running in concert with it is what I find impressive. HL 2's body models were still just rag dolls with their movements really being relatively meaningless, and the environments were hardly as malleable as these appear to be.
If the character models really wind up reacting the way they are trying to explain in the video, and the environments react in the ways described, I think this game will stand a good chance of "wowing" people for a while to come (much the same way HL2's physics engine did initially).
Granted, there is an equally good, if not better, chance that it could be pitiful - but why try to write something off instantly long before its ever released? |

oh im not arguing, i will pick this game up as soon as it comes out if i can.
there has always been a deep divide between the dark forces/jedi knight star wars games and largely every other licensed game in the universe.
i hope this one is as solid as the jedi knight gameplay-wise, and not just a physics demo however

Thats too bad, this kinda game would work well with a keyboard/mouse. |

This is my biggest fear, and the biggest risk when you've got developers talking the way these fellows are. |

| The interaction of the three various environmental engines definitely is something that will add to the immersion and sense of scale to the game, however I don't see that being a selling point of the game at all. If scripting, characters, story are all e, if it contains a total of 6hrs of game time, well, what does it even matter if that stormtrooper is flailing wildly when you use a force-push on him... is that all that interests people these days? I don't see this being anything other than another graphics 'innovation'. |
