well if she is into cats/lions/tigers, check out The Big Cat Rescue in Tampa. Not sure what times they have during the week but its at www.bigcatrescue.org
Like I said Ft. Desoto is nice, you can do beach stuff, or check out the fort, go kayaking, picnic, dog beach, whatever.
Otherwise downtown St. Pete you have the pier, always a decent place to check out when the weather is nice. There is a restaurant up top that is decent and looks out over the water. Beach drive down there has lots of little shops and places to eat, its worth walking around. The Dali museum isn't far from there as well, plus the museum of fine arts is right there by the pier.

Thats a few blocks from my house.. ha..

Are you guys renting a car? b/c public transportation pratically doesnt exist...

So it's just you and the pregnant Mrs? Busch Gardens would be fun although the rides might be a no-no for her. Ft. Desoto has some of the best beaches in the US and you can bum around the old fort there for free. It's small, but has a little piece of charm to it, regardless though the beaches there are A++. Ft. Desoto is about 15 min drive down the coast from TI, but not over the Sunshine Skyway. From the Ft. Desoto beaches you can see the Skyway which I think is still the largest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere. Incredible fishing there too. Wikipedia Skyway link

There is a bar/ food place called Gators that is at John's Pass. John's Pass is about 5 minutes north of Treasure Island, probably less. Gators is right there at the bridge and you can sit out and watch the boats go by and eat alligator bites and I've often seen dolphins while hanging out eating my gator and watching the boats. During football season its a huge Univ. of Florida Gator hang out place. Off season its just a sweet little bar/ food shop. If you have anything but sandles on then you are over dressed kinda place.

If you do have that rental car you could easily make a day trip to Orlando. That is also very doable, I've done it countless times. I think you'll be in before the spring break rush so crowds everywhere you go shouldn't be a big deal.

^^^ Thanks. Actually, it will be Mrs. Hazard, Chem_Enhanced, Chem's GF, my Mom, my Aunt, and I. We will have a rental vehicle so transport is not an issue.

I've done Bush Gardens before, nice place. This fort Desoto sounds interesting... how old a place are we talking here (**military history geek in me wants to know**)

Fort Desoto Wikipedia link

Well the actual military in me will tell^^... or at least give you the link to read about it.

Keep in mind though... you can see the entire Fort in about 1, maybe 2hrs if you are slow. So, if you go make that inconjuction with the beach. Don't go down there if its a gloomy day. It's that small.

BTW.. there is also a nice little dedicated dog beach that is dog friendly. I took my pup there once and its nice to have a fenced off beach to where all dogs are allowed. Right around the corner there are still the huge massive no dogs allowed beaches. This doesnt mean anything to you guys b/c you won't have a dog, but still, its cool.

You can take the ferry from Ft. Desoto to Egmont Key State Park. It's only accessible by ferry and you can go snorkling there or do other island beach type stuff. Again, be prepared for the weather to be too cold to do this sort of stuff. Have plan B's.

edit: Oh, last time I was there (Sept) there are these 4 man bikes you can rent that have canopy's over them that you can ride all over the Ft. Desoto area. That's a decent plan B opposed to the beach.

You've gotten me all fired up about your trip.

Clearwater is also another little spot north of TI that is tourist friendly.

Since you are Canada people you could do a Lightning hockey game vs Pitt in Tampa on March 4th. Get tickets now if you want to go b/c the Lightning always sell out. And post game Channelside is within walking distance from the arena. Mainly to drink and do bars etc..., but there is a movie theater down there that has an IMAX screen. The downtown trolly goes past the arena and takes you past the Florida Aquarium on the way to Ybor city (club district mentioned in a previous post). I've never ridden it, but its there.

Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven (between Tampa and Orlando, but closer to Tampa) is also a mild theme park to go to.

last few times (couple months ago) I was at Ft Desoto the ferry was closed.

The dog beach there is the best. I'm not even a dog owner and I love going there.

If you go to Ft Desoto keep in mind there are about $3 in tolls.
