Great band! The day-dreaming and strange feelings you get by listening to their frozen, enigmatic and atmospheric compositions are second to none. I do think that their last album was the best, it was indeed sublime.It had a kind of fairy-tale, out-of-this-world atmosphere. You got the dreamy "Glosoli", the nostalgic and at-the-same-time-explosive "Milano", the autumnal "Saeglopur", the dynamic and dramatic "Gong" etc. My pesonal favorite is "Svo Hljott" hough, what a great emotive crescendo!
Despite the greatness of the last album, my personal favorite has to be "( )", maybe because its' emotional power was associated with some specific situations, although it is definitely the slowest and moody of all(Too slowww at times!). After one gets to its' dark and moody slow ambience though its not easy to escape its' cold and grey twilight world... Perfect for night-time listening!
Post-rock is definitelly great music and here are some more of my favorite post-rock albums which i consider to be essential!
Godspeed you Black Emperor- "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" (THE classic post-rock album)
A Silver Mount Zion - "He Has Left Us Alobe but Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace The Corners of Our Rooms" (Almost neo-classical. Fantastic experimental compositions which can be really sad at times. Great violin and cello.)
Mogwai- "Happy Songs For Happy People" (Although "Ten Rapid" and "Young Team" are what i consider the true Mogwai, a sound that- (as one reviewer once said)- sounds like galaxies colliding, this newer, polished and more gentle version of their sound will probably appeal more to a Sigur Ros fan. Powerful guitar lines, violins and strange effects, and at times distorted vocals create a great emotional experience.)
Explosions in The Sky- "The Earth is Not A Cold Dead Place"
(As one poster said before, this is a great post-rock album. Romantic post-rock with some of the sweetest melodies you'll ever hear in music...)
Labradford "Mi Media Naranja"
(Labradford were an underrated dark and experimental post-rock group from the 90s. Making a sound which incorporates spacey Floydian guitars, American Western music, Dark Drone-Ambience and mysterious and weird effects, all packed with the singer's enigmatic whispering vocals, it can give you a kind of mystical trance. "Mi Media Naranja" is not considered only a classic post-rock album, but one of the best ambient albums of all times. A cult album indeed. "A Stable Reference" is also great. )
Caspian - "The Four Trees"
(Newer powerful instrumental post-rock. The sound of heavens coming out from a bunch of distorted guitars. )
The Evpatoria Report- "Golevka"
(Seriously, this is really good. The reverberated violins side by side to the mournful guitars have a huge emotional impact. A masterpiece.)
Hammock -"Kenotic"
(This is post-rock-meets-shoegaze-meets-ambient and it is really great. You can easily drift away and forget everything about present time and space with this kind of sound .Post-rock for day-dreamers. "Raising Your Voice, Trying To Stop an Echo" is equally beautiful)
Port-Royal - "Afraid To Dance"
(Mogwai-Explosions in the Sky post-rock meets Board of Canada and early Autechre experimental IDM/electronica. Deep ambient soundscapes, glitchy sounds, quitar lines, pianos, strange samples all create a fantastic journey)
M83- "Before The dawn Heals Us"
(although "DCRS&LG" is considered to be their best, this is my personal favorite. Post-rock through shoegaze and 80s new-wave. heavily influenced by My Bloody Valentine and 80s bands like The Cure and The Sound, this is the 80s synth-driven "new-wave" version of post-rock and IMO it is great. )
There are many more good albums but these are essential hehe |

This Will Destroy You make fantastic music, the reason i didn't mention them was because their sound is influenced by Explosions in The Sky, so one should go listen to the original thing first and then this. I have to say though, that to me, they sound better in comparison to Explosions in the Sky these days! their new "self-titled" album blew me away, it was indeed great.
