| I really like Sigur Ros although I like mostly as background music rather than as a focused listen most of the time. |

Man, i didn't know this band, nice find! Samples in myspace sound great. This is really heavy and deep stuff not for the faint-hearted though! I can see that this is more related to "post-metal"(?) Isi, Pelican and Red Sparowes (although the last ones are more straight post-rock) stuff and whilst i don't like "post-metal", this really sounds ace! I like how the slow emotional parts are suddenly followed by heavy quitar-soundscapes. I don't know how much it would appeal to a Sigur Ros fan though...
From the samples it sounds like a cross between post-rock (it brings to mind Saxon Shore-another amazing post-rock band) and doom-ambient. Have you ever heard of "doom-ambient" (or "metal-gaze" as it is called, from "metal" and "shoegaze")? Its like this stuff only heavier still! Good "doom-ambient" bands are Nadja and The Angelic Process. Its heavy, slow and ethereal. I (occasionally-not always truth is!) love this stuff...
For those of you who are not afraid to dwell into into the experimental and the obscure, but at the same time emotional and elegant (SMC take notice), here are two full "ambient-doom" tunes. use your headphones, relax and prepare for a journey...(hope you are not scared though!)

| On their dvd, Heima, there is a part where they are in what looks like a cave and they are all 4 playiing a weird kind of xylophone. This is one of my favorite parts of that 2 disc set. These guys could probably create music from just about anything. |

You definitely need to listen to this "Solace" album, absolutely mindblowing stuff. It doesn't go as far as being post-metal but it is quite a heavy rocking record. Heavy post-rock, if you like. It's very spacy and bassy. It focuses a lot on the atmosphere, it's a little dark and droning in its places and has a very wide panoramic wall-of-noise type sound, but without drifting out into drone/noise territory. It's very groovy, with some really great drumming. It's music that breathes, music that takes it's time and that also is extremly powerful.
Definetely my favorite post-rock album along with our beloved "Golevka", which is quite heavy too, as you know. ;)
About post-metal: how come you don't like Isis? They're awesome imo. :toocool:

I've checked out some Nadja tracks from different releases and frankly they all sound the same. :happy2: It's a bit like the drone doom of Sunn O))) but treated so that it sounds bigger and more abrasive, thus gaining the "gaze" character. While i can find some pieces a little interesting i fear it's a little too much noise/non-music for me. |

I used to love hard and alt rock but i cant stand the electric blaring guitars now.. especially when im baked... ;)
looks like i have a ton of listening homework to do now.
finally, i can get into the postrock and experimental.

Man, i'm continuously listening to the Jakob tunes in myspace every day now. I'm heavily addicted!!! Thanks x 1000 for the recommendation! Damn where can i find their albums? I see they are from Australia and the albums are a bit hard to find. I can also see that the first album ("subset of sets" isn't it?)is "out of print". This is a real shame because the myspace featured tunes of the 1rst album are absolutely mind-blowing! (in similarity to the tunes of the 2nd and 3rd albums ofcourse!). I really need this stuff...Great find mate!
I like the music of Isis but o can't stand the-at times male thrashmetal-type vocals. I guess "Panopticon" is their best release right? the music is indeed good, it sounds like Explosions in the SKy only heavier and more dynamic which is a good thing. Maybe i should give another listen.
What do you thing of Red Sparowes? I find the first album "At the Soundless Dawn" completely mind-blowing. Its again heavier post-rock (rather then post-metal) and every single tune in there is a sonic masterpiece. I recently (two days ago actually) bought the second album "Every Red Heart Shines Toward The Red Sun", but i'm not sure if i get it yet. Technically is superior to the second one since the music is definitely more complex and virtuose in comparison to the first album, but the melodies are not that obvious (ofcourse this could be a good thing) and it sounds too noisy at times. Maybe i need to listen it a few more times since it really is quite complex and clinical.
Another heavier post-rock (maybe shoegaze) that border-lines with doom-metal are Jesu. I read that Nadja were heavily influenced by them. Have you heard of these guys? |

I only recently discovered Sigur Ros after Joris Voorn ended his EM with Heysatan which I loved.
Downloaded and then bought Takk and Međ suđ í eyrum viđ spilum endalaust.
Love them both. Cant believe how good some of their tracks are. Have yet to try out their older works which I believe is more on the ambient side to the newer stuff but I'll definately be checking them out soon.
My favourites off the last two albums are

svo hljótt
though I do like a lot of the others as well, the more upbeats ones on the last album are very good. Would like to hear these out at a festival with a few beers in hand and the sun shining... |
