[Review] Gabriel & Dresden Pacha NYC 2/29/08 (pg. 3)

It wasn't that bad.
I had started out saying that I wouldn't pay to see them again, and I still wouldn't. Tom kindly offered to pay for my entrance so I went, knowing that at least I would have a good evening with friends.
I rescind my previous statement that Pacha has gotten better. Pacha was an effing nightmare to deal with. We got there a little after twelve, go inside, pay, etc. You know how you go up the stairs, into the hip hop room, walk around, and then go downstairs? Well they would not for the life of us let us downstairs. We were like WTF!! We pulled every string we had but they would not let us down. They said they weren't letting people down until 2. That's 2 hours! We ran into several other people who were having the same problem as well. There were 2 TAs, Brett and, I can't for the life of me remember the other guy's name but it began with a J, who we ran into. (Thanks guys for giving us your VIP bracelets at the end of the night :-) ) And some folk from Rhode Island who wound up leaving because they couldn't get downstairs.
So we hung out in Pachita for 2 hours. They were playing some kind of EDM, which I enjoyed but was not what we payed for. We finally got downstairs and I had a few more drinks. I actually ran into several different groups of people that I knew, so that made the evening fun. Musically however... At first I found that they would play a good song that got the crowd really motivated! And then they would follow it up with something that was a bit of a let down and killed the mood.
But then... I got extra extra hammered! And they played Sander! And they played Deadmau5! And I have absolutely no f*ckin clue what else they played but I loved it, loved every minute of it! But I do think that may have had a lot to do with how intoxicated I was and the fact that I was surrounded by all these friends :)
In conclusion: Had a great evening, and Pacha still has a bunch of s for staff. |

yea i had a good time... would have regretted it if i hadn't gone out friday night. cud have been the last time u see them together in nyc |

i, too, find it silly when people troll threads and on a gig they didn't attend.
that being said, the reason i don't respect g&d as djs is that they take absolutely no pride in their dj-ing and for years have been among the leaders in spinning lazy and thoughtless sets.
this affliction affects the vast majority of producers, who decide that being a dj is more fun/more lucrative and show up at clubs spinning the same sloppy sets gig after gig. they simply don't care enough to build a proper set or work on their craft -- and g&d have shown zero interest in improving as djs over the years.
take holden as example of a producer who did it the right way. holden's earlier sets (when he was switching from progmeister to arrogant minimalist) were absolutely atrocious but as a result of working on his stuff he's become a legitimate dj. and i say this as someone who doesn't even like holden all that much.
when you look at a real dj's set, even one whom you don't care for, you can recognize that they're attempting to do something up there: the sloppy club dj is like plucking someone from a wedding or a bar mitzvah and plopping them down in a place they don't belong. |
