Yeah, it surprised me too :p Anyway, in case you want to know more about how this kind of thing works, there was a recent discussion about whether or not the purgatory existed. Unfortunately (and quite surprisingly), it's not been added to Wikipedia's entry on the History of Purgatory yet... but I guess you can easily find it if you look it up :) |
It shouldn't be surprising... the church is constantly examining itself and its doctrine. I'm sure that once the actual position comes out it will be well supported theologically.
With regard to the purgatory question... if I recall correctly there was no actual decision on whether or not it existed; however, it was resolved that the idea of time spent in purgatory was erred as time can not exist in a place without matter and subsequently without motion. |

I think the usefulness of purgatory to the Catholic Church pretty much ended after the practice of paying indulgences to get relatives out of purgatory ended. |

I find this interesting:
So theoretically I'm allowed to eat a mushroom once a week or to smoke some weed from time to time. There's no abuse in that, right? |

The story that newspapers have latched on to comes from an interview Archbishop Gianfranco Girotti (head of the Apostolic Penitentiary) gave to L'Osservatore Romano (the official newspaper of the Vatican Holy See). He didn't give real details in the interview... as everything the Vatican does, you can expect their position will be very elaborate and complex, unfortunately, nuanced positions don't work for sound bites so the media will boil it down to "stem-cell research and polluting are deadly sins." |
Oh, that explains why I couldn't find anything :p

I too believe the arguments will be well founded, but what surprised me was the fact that the 7 sins are so fundamental to Christian faith, that I didn't think they'd double them.

I didn't know about the second bit, thanks :) |

No, not really.
Original seven deadly sins:
Luxuria (extravagance / lust), Gula (gluttony), Avaritia (greed), Acedia (sloth), Ira (wrath), Invidia (envy), and Superbia (pride). |

lust = pedophilia
greed = the creation of poverty
sloth = environmental pollution
pride= excessive wealth
gluttony = drug abuse
envy = genetic manipulation
its all relatively similar....just different wording, i think. obviously wrath/abortion doesn't really match up [although they kind of do...], but the rest i think are along the same *similar lines.
*similar does not mean exact. obviously there are different contexts |

the list
drug abuse
abortion
environmental pollution
excessive wealth
the creation of poverty
genetic manipulation
pedophilia
so basically the Catholic church is screwing itself over on at least 2:
excessive wealth
pedophilia
:haha: |
