Funny how they made that list forbidding things which are considered... hm bad. According to the religion they represent (?) only God can give rules and regulations to his followers. So basically, this is a big pile of .

those are all pretty sound.

drug abuse - i use drugs, but certainly abusing them shouldn't be something to do.

abortion - there are times that it should be done and others that it shouldn't. this is pretty vague to just ban everything. i think there are good reasons for abortions out there. irresponsible sexytime isn't one of them of course.

environmental pollution - definitely, our environment is very important to keep clean.

excessive wealth - getting rich just to be rich, and getting richer and richer for no reason than to have a big bank account, without giving it back to community and using it to create a better world for everyone is a total sin. there's certainly comfort levels that everyone wants to achieve but there's also over the top. the only question is where do we draw the line where wealth becomes excessive?

the creation of poverty - certainly. one should not advertantly force people into being poor. kind of ties into the previous one, as one accumulates wealth - someone becomes poor.

genetic manipulation - the only one i don't agree with. we stand to benefit a lot from this relatively new scientific field.

pedophilia - cut their dicks off, i don't care who it is, pedophilia is just sick and wrong.

conclusion, i guess the church got 5 out of 7 right. that's not bad at all.

“Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death [gates of hell] shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." [Mt 16:17-19]

This verse is the source of papal supremecy and authority... essentially, the Vatican claims that because Jesus vested the authority to pass laws that would be binding in heaven in Peter then all successive popes have the same authority... essentially the claim is that if the Pope makes a rule then Jesus will enforce it.

So subjective it's ridiculous.

Environmental pollution: So, driving is off limits? Using anything plastic? Eating cow... which farts methane? Buying vegetables upon which pesticide was used?

Excessive wealth: define excessive. To a starving Ethiopian, anyone with a spare dollar to buy a snickers could be viewed as having 'excessive' wealth.

Pedophilia: you know... in some places there is no age of consent...furthermore, what about cp?

Creation of poverty: What's poverty and how many degrees of separation are applicable? If I lose all my money in the stockmarket, am I a sinner? My broker? The general public for not properly supporting my investments?

Genetic Manipulation: Every time you procreate you manipulate genes.

I guess drug abuse and abortion are the most clearcut...

I liked the other sins better... they seemed to encompass more. Once again, they leave things so open to interpretation that they ensure people will polarize within the church and fight over the true meaning of these sins...

As I mentioned earlier... the church has not actually released a document detailing these "new" sins, rather, everything the papers are writting is paraphrased from an interview with one archbishop. Wait until the papal decree is made, read it, then evaluate it.

Additionally, I must point out, these "new" sins do not negate the old ones.

Amusing that people still consider what a bunch of decrepit old men in a cloistered environment who make a point of never having sex, have anything worthwhile to contribute to society.
"Oh look out, we're losing contact with what modern humanity is thinking!"
"Damn, we better get hip with the times... do people still use 'hip'?"
"I dunno. Lets just state the obvious bad things and make it canon!"

Sooner developing countries manage some kind of unbiased education system the better, least that way they won't be mentally crippled by guilt all their lives and the majority of their supporters will be able to see it for the anachronism that it is.
