Agree completely. Especially the House part. I sometimes skim through the Events section, and shake my head cause it's like 10 House events to every other genre combined.

Well that's what you get for thinking TA is the center of the party universe.

There's a load of other events going on at any given time that have nothing to do with TA, and cater to a multitude of tastes.

Just because it isn't advertised on TA, doesn't mean it isn't happening somewhere.

Making it as a DJ, what would you say is the split formula?

I'm thinking (especially in Toronto) it's:

75% dick sucking
25% talent

* This reflects the present time obviously. I'm sure if i asked myself this question a few years back it would be different.

Thoughts?

50% talent
50% who knows you.

if you want gigs you have to be able to mix, play half decent music, be a scenster, have lots of friends and be able to get people to come see you play.

You could be the best DJ in the world, but if no one knows who you are and you can only bring 5 people out to see you, then where's the motivation for a promoter to book you? I want people that will bring either through promoting their gigs or through recognition of their name.. and when i say promoting their gigs, I don't mean doing the job of the promoter, but at least make a minimal effort to promote what you do.. call/email/invite your freinds on facebook or something. Pretty much every DJ in the city does this. even the ones with regular gigs do it.

Good DJ's promote themselves. hell even the big boys list their gigs on their websites, myspace etc, mailing lists etc...

It depends on what you mean by "making it." As a full-time career choice
I'd say a lot of self-sacrifice, hard work, and working in clubs/venues
that you have no desire to spin in or spinning Top 40, whatever the club wants. Probably a certain degree of business savvy with a hint of accounting wouldn't hurt. Networking probably is the majority of what it takes to be successful.

Personally, I just like the idea that if a bunch of people can party and have good time to your set, if you can dance to it...you've made it.

I think its somewhere around 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration.

If you are actually talented and you work hard, and grind long enough, it doesnt matter how much of a scenester or not you are, how many dicks you suck... you will get noticed eventually.

oh yea... and production helps too...

see you on beatport suckers!

work hard at what? practicing in your living room?
think what you want that doesn't get you gigs. I've been in this scene for almost a decade and a half now and have seen more good DJs than i could ever rememeber come and go... or never actually come in the first place.

production defintely helps, and if you actually have talent then you will prob get noticed and get some gigs out of it.

But as we all know, 95% of beatport is music made by people no one has ever heard of.

Yea, i jumped the gun on the /thread.

You bring up a fantastic point.

being a flash in the pan is one thing, but continuously being on top, or near the top, in your local scene/internationally. Is something completely different.

What i mean to say is:

Work hard at promoting yourself and getting your material out there where people will see it. Do what you have to make sure you get noticed. You don't have to suck dick to get noticed.

And while the majority of music on beatport is music by nobodys, thats why there are trusted labels producing quality music. Its a brand name you can trust!
