Making it as a DJ, what would you say is the split formula?
I'm thinking (especially in Toronto) it's:
75% dick sucking
25% talent
|
How is this different than in any other division of the music industry?.... |

I truely beleive you really have to work your ass off to get anywhere. Sure there will always be politics and having a friend who's a promoter never hurts, but unless your prepared to work hard you'll get nowhere. Just like any business.
I've only been back on the scene for a couple of years and have had some great success getting gigs and residencies lately. Its definitely not from having all these connections. I worked my ass off to get demo's into people hands and I bugged the out of the promoters to give me one shot. From there the success came from having the skill, being able to read the crowd, AND from pulling a crowd. I actually do a hell of a lot of my own promotion and the clubs/promoters love that. I treat this as my own business. The more I put into it, the more I'll get out of it.
In fact, i don't know why more Dj's don't do the same thing (the promotion). I see guys just sitting around waiting for the phone to ring. These are the same people who say I got lucky for this gig or that gig. , luck had nothing to do with it. I worked hard to get my foot in the door and then I brought alot to the table. Promoters will see that and hopoefully reward it. Its a business for them too. There's a ton of talented DJ's in this city, so why should they book you? What can you offer?
I wish it was as easy as just sucking some cock....... |
