Indeed. That's why I asked here instead of the production forum ;)
Thanks a ton Tony - I'm probably just going to pay the $200 for the upgrade pack to Ableton 7 (I own 4), since I'm most familiar with that.
:) |
To be honest, I think the upgrade from Ableton Live 6 to Live 7 is a rip off for that price. I noticed no noticeable differences in sound quality, and it's all much the same as the previous version. It's still the best version of Ableton out there though. For you, since you're upgrading from Ableton Live 4 to Live 7, you will definitely notice a huge difference. |

| Yeah - I think it's a great deal for me, but would be clueless as to know how good a deal it is for the 6-7 transition. |

RJT, are you having issues with Ableton and/or other programs in regards to sequencing MIDI notes and then playing them back through an instrument? Is the instrument hardware or software?
As far as the upgrade from 6 to 7...I had 5... 6 came out...waited for a while...they announced 7...I bought 6 for 99 for the upgrade and got 7 for free. No need for you to upgrade to 7 yet if you still need to work on learning the basics...but that's just my opinion.
I've been using Ableton quite a bit lately for picture lock with quicktime movies. It's still no Pro Tools, but you can do some creative things now that they've incorporated video. Still a great tool for sound manipulation, bar none. |

I guess what I've had the biggest trouble with is that I haven't been able to figure out how to play a melody on my M-Audio keyboard and have that translate to a .mid - I've basically just been using the mouse to create them, and its seemed a very tedious way of going about it. |

I also really struggle with writing MIDI's in Ableton for some reason, maybe just that it seems like a frustrating affair for one reason or another. |
Double-check to see if you made any of these simple mistakes... the OUT on your keyboard must go to the IN of the soundcard. The OUT of your soundcard must go to the IN of your keyboard.
Make sure you are recording on a MIDI track, not an audio track.
Check to see if your soundcard is configured properly on your computer AND inside Ableton Live.
Check to make sure the red Arm button is enabled when recording.
I know most of these are "duh" statements but you'd be surprised how many of these mistakes people tend to make :) |

When is the next time you'll be in town? Let's meet up for an hour and we can just sort all this stuff out. |

Not sure right now - probably Sasha, but maybe before then. I really appreciate the offer Tolgar, and I would definitely like to take you up on it.
It's for sure much easier to learn from having someone in front of you to at least watch. :) |

Absolutely... I learn the most when I try to help out or work with others...so it's a bonus for both of us. Make sure you hit me up on myspace or here and let me know your itinerary and I'll bring my lappie and midi controller and we can putz around.:) |

| Im a Logic 7.1 guy. Once you get the hang of Logic is pretty amazing. I have used Ableton as well, and found that for messing with audio it is a bit easier, but as far as plug-ins and writing Midi and sequencing tunes, I like Logic a lot better. The stock plug-ins in Logic are amazing as well. It all comes down to personal preference and what you are most familiar with. Each program has its pro's and con's. Hope that helps a bit.....:) |

I think Logic's sound engine is reminiscent of when I had an mpc... the algorhythm for sound conversion makes the output of all their files absolutely incredible. Sadly, I'm on pc so I'm still jamming on Logic 5.5. |

More than anything it's just nice to hear how some of you go about making the music I've listened for quite some time now.
And Topher - I've definitely heard nothing but good things about Logic from people who use it regularly. It's the stock music production program on campus here, so there might be some solid resources for it here. Will definitely be giving it another look as I haven't even tried to tackle it in years. |
