coming to this country at 11 years old I was already at the same level of math as my 14-15 counterparts (algebra II). although i was excited at the time, looking bad it was sad to see people three to four grades higher asking me questions about homework.

i also loved it how amazing it was that a football (read: soccer) player could be also good at math. it was staight up off krypton for people.

edit: i'm not saying it's for everyone but mathematics are usually the standard pathway into other sciences, especially physics. hence why scientists from europe and asia dominate.

yea very true! Americans are way behind in Math, but what is the problem exactly? Is it mentality of the kids? Or is it just the lack of good educaters in general and a program that gets the kids interested. For me, the mentality in math classes was that they "teachers" assume u already know how to do alot of things and move on to concepts that require the background that a student is lacking, so there pretty much dead right there before they start. This tends to discourage the student and they lose interest or feel stupid and don't care anymore. I pursued a major in college that had tons of math, and it was never my best subject or my favorite.

i always thought it was the lawmakers responsible. the standards are generally not set very high state by state. there was a great NPR show about this last week or the week before i believe. a lot of it has to do with budget from what i understand.

i haven't really brushed up on "why", i just know that math, universe-wide, is one of the most important things you can understand.

kind of "out there" argument. but if other sentient being were to appear, ET and all that, math is one language we could all agree on and understand. there's actually studies being done on pigmies in the jungle about how to communicate through math when one doesn't understand the other's language, it's bizzare stuff - was in National Geographic last December i believe.

Yea thats all the stuff we hear in the media, and it bothers me though that nothing is done to change the priorities of the schools from American football or sports in general to education. I don't think its a lack of money issue, since we are the wealthiest country in the world. I guess they figure, if a company needs a brain or math person, look to a foreigner :whip:

Yeah that.

Then imagine your sitting in class, next to you is someone who is a ing genius at math, and for tha last half hour he is looking at the professor with the WTF did you just say look on his face.

Then imagine that the professor says " Of course you will need to prove all this on the verbal part of the exam, but im not going to explain the proof to you since it should be obvious by now" and goes on with the next lesson.

Its no surprise that the bar that was 30 seconds away from the building where the above mentioned torture was going on was running out of alcohol on a daily basis.

LOL!! I did the same !

we had one of our meteorology classes @ 3-4pm on MWF....and the bars would open @ 4pm for "Friday After Class" (FAC = happy hour, basically) $2 guinness pints and free pool at one of the Irish Pubs.

every. ing. friday. for literally almost a whole school year there was a group of us who were there

Moongoose
Well this bar opened up at 6am for coffee since school started at 7 (officially at least, even the teacher would normally drag himself into the classroom at 7.15t the earliest with a pint of coffee in his hand :D ). And from 9am when they were legally allowed to start serving alcohol, well you would always find at lest a student or two on the edge of a breakdown trying to drown his sorrows in alcohol.

But most of the heavy drinking was going on on tuesdays here. Since most students would return home for the weekend nobody really drank on fridays. Tuesday is the official student party night. Try to fit enough alcohol into your system to keep you going until friday when you can go home and collapse on your bed. Ah the wonders of attending a tech uni.
