Difference Between Hardware/Software Synth?

could somebody explain what the main difference is other then one is software and the other hardware? and what is the convenience of having a hardware synth? thanks in advance.

benefits of hardware:
-dedicated knobs and
-wont crash (other than virus ti or blofeld)
-doesnt use cpu
-makes you feel cooler
-more likely to impress girls

benefits of software:
-cheap
-your settings are recallable from the project file, whereas on hardware you need to reload them from a patch
-can use many times in one project, whereas hardware is limited to X many timbres

the best soft synths sound just as good as hardware these days, so it is a non-issue. the biggest selling point of hardware is that you have a dedicated physical interface. this makes it a hell of a lot easier to learn the synth inside out and really get it's full potential. software is a pain in the ass to program imo.

MOJO.

unfortunately there is no soft synth that matches the virus, clavia or a moog in sound. one day there will be, but not now. though im perfectly happy with the softys i use and dont feel they need any more power, i know my music would be better if i dropped all the softs and used a virus.

also, the use of anologue cables between the synth and soundcard adds that hardware sound. that tiny almost un noticable difference in sound reminds me that it is human made and not some ing computer.

Its interesting actually when you say about cables, because there was a rumour that Jimi Hendrix used to use long cable runs (30+ foot) to achieve his sound, which has always been famous. So there may be something in this.
Like I said tho, a great part of the whole thing is MOJO, just the interaction and love you feel for the gear, if you can love software then it'll probably work just as well for you.

i think its just a matter of what you just feel most comfortable working with.. i mean im using soft synths and why would i spent loads of money on hardware synths, if i can the software synths for a hell of a lot cheaper? i think it also is kind of a ego boost to make yourself look so "professional"..

I know of a few people who use software because it is cheap for them or 'free'(warez) as they like to call it.If some people are unwilling to fork out for software, it is highly unlikely they will fork out for some hardware. I myself have found a happy medium with hard and software. There are certain softsynths out there that i truly couldnt live without(Albino3,Vaz Modular, etc etc). I also have a JP-8080(amazing), and a Virus TI on order. I'll be gertting an Andromeda when i make some bloody room too:haha:

As much as i like the sound of Albino and Vaz Mod, there is much more fun to be had when you're 'hands on' with hardware, and that's what making music should be . . . . FUN ! !

one hurts hard when u hit ur head on it on it, the other doesnt hurt cuz it's soft and doesnt really touch you

right remember when you were a kid and your parents gave you those playskool plastic toys, like a hammer and a saw? then later in life you got the real thing and realized how much damage they could really do?

its kinda like that.

I have all softsynths and i just went to guitar center yesterday and played on some korgs and rolands synths and i believe one difference is that it seems you could be get inspired a lot easier and more often if you have a hardware synthesizer to play around with. Also a lot more creative and diverse with sounds which is what the trance scene is crying out for right now.

Software is far more superior now because of all the features they have but most people dont even understand them. Hardware is controlled by voltage so nothing is perfect and a lot of things like filters do not react instantly. These imperfections in pitch etc can make the sound more pleasing to the ear since its like natural vibrato and tremelo affects. These are all useless now though since the software can do everything.

That only applies to analog hardware, which isn't what most people are using these days...
