Nico - it rained the whole first day we were here, but now it's been great (though it looks like there will be a lot of rain the next few days).

Nikos - I know you've been here, I just had a McDonalds epiphony and really thougt you'd do well here. :p

Garth - Barney's isn't even close to the same as it was. It's truly a dreadful place now, no breakfast, not at all friendly. Just an all around awful place now. :(

So far probably the two shops we've chilled at the most are GreenHouse Centrum and Dolphins. Both have had very, very laid back crowds (which wasn't the case last time I was here), and have just been nice places to sit and chill for a while after walking all day.

:)

I posted this in the thread in c0r, but thought since I put so much effort into it I may as well post it here too :p

Alright, so here’s a bit more on the above, and some other stuff about the trip, but first....

How we got banned from St. Christophers Inn’s the world over!

The first hostel we stayed at was OK – they had a great bar, but it was very, very rowdy and loud all the time, and filled with drunken English and Americans day and night, so we didn’t spend all too much time there. The staff were also complete cunts save for two of the bar staff – everyone else was a ing knob.

One night we were chilling out and smoking a joint in the lounge and I tried to purchase some munchies from the vending machine because the kitchen hadn’t been open all day. My chips got stuck between the glass and the machine, so naturally Myra and I give it a few shoves and bam, we’re good to go.

The machine was built like a tank, and we could barely move it at all, much less cause any damage to it (certainly no more than the rest of the crowd was causing in the bar), but two seconds later this fellow from the hotel who was a complete prick the entire trip comes barreling into the lounge raving about how he has “Pictures and Videotapes of me trying to vandalize the hotel.” After repeating the phrase “We have the pictures, we have the videotape” about half a dozen times (he was clearly ing mashed, and had been the whole trip – but may well have been the hotel manager for all we know) he finally understood that it wasn’t the fact that he had them that I cared about, it was what he planned to do with them. After a lot of empty threats, he just said “I’m attaching a note to your bill, you are permanently banned from all of our establishments.” I said I was “quite sorry” as he walked off, but it was pretty clear this guy had just been looking for any reason he could find to tee off on a tourist – so in hindsight it’s quite a bit more funny and sad than I had even remembered.

But yes, we are permanently banned from all St. Christophers Inn’s throughout Europe, lol.

Uttered by Myra on the first or second day of the trip. Needless to say, the fact that it was a pure accident in speech and that she clearly wasn't sober was something I found hilarious.

- Overheard from a student supposedly "doing research" for Students for Sensible Drug Policy: "I'm a really irresponsible pot smoker."

Two kids staying at our hostel introduced themselves to me when they arrived as "representing" SSDP to do some research in the city. They weren't necessarily complete douchebags, but they were also not particularly awesome either.

Two mornings later they're both having some beers with a few of the other guests and basically talking about all the various substances they'd gotten into - which I paid no mind to until I heard the above.

I was pretty high, so maybe it's not that funny, but meh - I thought it was. :p

Find it, play it, more pics to come. Enough said. ;)

- Shops of the trip (Various Reasons): Kadinsky, Homegrown Fantasy, Any Day, the Dolphins, Hunters Bar, Betty Boop

Kadinsky: Probably the shop that we spent the most time chilling out in, it’s still the same as I remember it – very chill place to hang out, and with the weather being as dicey as it was this place became a great place to get out of the weather. Unfortunately, they also had pretty weed. Not bad by any means, but not good either.

Homegrown Fantasy: Far and away the winner for herb. I tried a bout 6 things from their menu over the course of the week, and not one of them was even remotely bad. Power plant was my favorite, but I seriously loved them all. Very nice bongs, friendly staff, excellent space cake – can’t say enough good things.

Any Day: Stella Blue is still the best marijuana in Amsterdam. Hands down.

The Dolphins: One of the most amazing interiors designs for a shop in all of Amsterdam. Rarely too busy for all too long, and the whole place feels like the inside is underwater. We have a great pic coming from here. Their weed was also phenomenal, specifically the shop special White Dolphin. Run by an interesting couple of girls who I think a lot of people feel are rude, but they were awesome to us – and we stopped their regularly.

Hunters Bar: This is where I feel in love with Villalobos. Whatever live set they had on was awesome. Very chill place with amazing music and one of the few chill places to get a beer and smoke. Also one of the few places with the Purps on the menu – very solid job with it. On our “bonus night” there was a woman playing records there that was at least 40 and played as well as Howells. Everything from techno to Chicago house, with a smattering of old R&B and funk records. Awesome.

Betty Boop: This place was like an old friend to me. Just as I remembered it, also a very consistent menu (tried at least 6) – friendly staff who chatted us up quite a bit, another awesome place to just chill out. Met the manager of the Grasshopper shops there one night and sat bullting with him for a few hours, it was awesome – though he did say that the weed at the Grasshopper was the best in the city (duh), and in reality it was without a doubt the worst.

Music
quote:

- DJ Jean "The Launch", J5, Axwell "Feel the Vibe", "Put Your Hands up for Detroit", Daft Punk, Andy Caldwell, chill drum & bass, Andy Caldwell, Haji & Emanuel, Hits from the Bong, G&D "Let it Go" (LOL), and "lots of that sounds like it's probably Deadmau5."

We heard an insane amount of good music while we were in Amsterdam, and surprisingly, some of the most fun tunes to hear were utter and complete . We both laughed our asses off when we heard “Put Your Hands up for Detroit” and “Let it Go” (we heard the latter dropped live, lol), and the amount of Daft Punk we heard was pretty awesome as well.

We also heard a lot of really, really chill drum & bass (played at a reasonable volume) that was excellent chillout music – and hearing Andy Caldwell “Give a Little” while seeing a bald pot dealer jam out was also ace.

Also, so much ing Deadmau5 (or stuff that sounds exactly like it).

- I finally get Ricardo Villalobos. Boy, do I ever. . Epic.

Pretty sure I already covered this – but yeah, Villalobos + really chill bar * dutch weed = win.

We should have taken a picture. No words I can come up with could possibly describe how awesome seeing this kid eat a hot dog while staring into a porn shop was.

The announcements at Schipol sound EXACTLY like the voiceover robot from Portal – and boy does it ever get to the point. The number of times I heard “John Smith, you are delaying your flight. Please head to terminal X or we will gladly offload your luggage so the flight may depart.”

- Canceled flight = Bonus Day. Win.

Our flight home on Saturday was canceled, and depending who you ask it was either because of weather or technical things. Either way, it was awesome. We got another whole night/day in the city to bum around, and wound up maybe having the best night of the trip because of it. Just seeing the old woman spin records at Hunters was outstanding.

The first thing we heard when we got on the shuttle to our car was…

Quite the pleasant return. ;)

I'm sure once Myra has some time she'll get the pictures up and I'll have more to say about them, but for now this is pretty much a good view of the highlights of the trip for me.

:)
