Improvising over other people's tracks

Any of you guys try improvising melodies or chords over your favorite tracks?
I find this a good exercise, especially if you're looking to make something with a similar mood / atmosphere to the track you're listening to.
It's also helpful with harmony, developing your intuition for how to make the parts of a song "work" together. |

| I do this now and then while sitting at the piano. Even over silly stuff like commercials or kid shows. It's fun and keeps my ear trained. :) |

| I have this a few times, usually with older tracks! Adding a lush pad to dj jurgen - better off alone for example.. |

I've done this several times "in my mind", and found it to be a quite useful trick for getting a track started. After I've got the improvisation down, I usually force myself to forget what track it came from so I don't borrow any other elements from the original track. |

| For sure, it's really entertaining and educational to play along your favourite tracks, and alot of fun to add some melody or pad to a track :) |
