Improvising over other people's tracks

Any of you guys try improvising melodies or chords over your favorite tracks?

I find this a good exercise, especially if you're looking to make something with a similar mood / atmosphere to the track you're listening to.

It's also helpful with harmony, developing your intuition for how to make the parts of a song "work" together.

I do this now and then while sitting at the piano. Even over silly stuff like commercials or kid shows. It's fun and keeps my ear trained. :)

not on trance tracks...most of them are just to simple in terms of harmonic progression....

I have this a few times, usually with older tracks! Adding a lush pad to dj jurgen - better off alone for example..

I've done this several times "in my mind", and found it to be a quite useful trick for getting a track started. After I've got the improvisation down, I usually force myself to forget what track it came from so I don't borrow any other elements from the original track.

For sure, it's really entertaining and educational to play along your favourite tracks, and alot of fun to add some melody or pad to a track :)
