| has to be love for the music for me. at some point in my life i started buying cds because i loved the music. then all of a sudden i had a load of them. then i decided that it might be fun trying to mix the tunes together so i bought my first gear (after saving like mad and spending most of my money on cds). |

| I got into trance in 96/97 (mainly goa), and started buying cds and signles. In 2000, I bought my first decks and mixer... so at age 14 I began to mix. Didn't get good at it tilla round 15/16... and now here I am, 23 and kicking ass. Tho now I prefer a digital and analog mixing system. |

| i grew up in the 80's looking up to hip-hop dj's and breakdancing, i was just amazed and drawn to it. so obviously i spin trance and not hip-hop but i still love the old school hip-hop dj's, not so much the new ones. |

Lost my mind n sanity at Aria, Montreal
It's neva coming back...
But each time I spin, I channel that Aria vibe into my sound and it's like I'm rejuvenated back to when I was 18.
It's sorta like a blast from the past going on.

| Long story short, my uncle was a big time resident dj in a club in Brazil in his early years. He showed me his old ass set up one day, after I was already listening to daft punk and some euro dance pop cheese on my own, when I was turning 14 and I fell in love. Couple months later he gave me all his gear and that's when went down the rabbit hole. None of the gear works anymore but boy I still wanna keep that junk.. |

| I've always had an intimate passion for the music...but quite frankly what did it for me was my first time @ Space and saw Oscar G tear that main room into fuccin bits...From then on, I know that I wanted to do the same thing:cool: |

I gained an interest in DJ'ing when I was about 13, around the same time that I was transitioning from Hip-Hop and Top-40 to cheesy dance/Trance music. I started downloading various mixing programs such as PCDJ and Traktor, and would call into the local Hip-Hop station on the weekends, during the little noon hour where they had an actual DJ in, and try to suggest different types of transitions into different tracks (yeah, :wtf: ).
After a while I progressed to listening solely to dance music and whored Tiesto like crazy. A few years passed by and I came across Zabiela. Everything he did was what really fascinated me; the fact that it wasn't just track-to-track and still sounded great. I think that whole aspect is what really motivated me to get gear. I bought one CDJ and would mix back and forth (sans EQs) between that and whatever I had playing on Traktor on my PC. Then I picked up another CDJ + Xone:62, and eventually an EFX-500.
Now I'm at the point where I have two broken CDJs and one functional one. Until I can afford new ones my current setup is a borrowed Radium-49 keyboard, Ableton and my EFX.

I mentioned that I used really lame DJ software before I got decks, and I cannot stress enough how helpful I found them to be. Sure, you can't really learn how to beatmatch with them. That's a given. However, they helped me to define what I liked to play, how to create flow, and how to phrase-match. Once I picked up my decks the only thing that I needed to do (and was a piece of cake) was learn to beatmatch, as I'd already taught myself everything else. To this day I highly recommend using cheap DJ software while you're saving for gear. |

Actually, I learned to beatmatch on Traktor. But, I went in with the intent of doing so... I did everything manually so that I could learn the skill and not rely on the computer. It worked... I can beatmatch other media too. |

I started listening to EDM back in 99 around the time of the EM World Tour. I kept on listening and then I got into ASOT back around '03 and that's where I really started listening to the actual transitions themselves. I got a copy of Virtual DJ and mixed on my computer for a few years. That helped me to learn phrasing and the eqs. Finally, I '06, I bit the bullet and bought cdjs and a mixer. I've since added a midi controller and a laptop with Torq.
I will say this though, there is nothing like learning by your ears FIRST vs. just using a DVS with visual aids to help. Forcing myself to do it ears only made all the difference. |
