What made you start dj'ing? (pg. 4)

I messed around with atomix and virtual dj back in 02/03 but found it boring on a pc... fast forward half a decade later, I got my friend interested in DJ'ing somehow (probably all the gigs I dragged her out too haha) and once I saw her setup, I was damn I want to DJ too! few months later I got my mixer & CDJs. This past February we had our first real gig playing an early time slot for San Francisco trance pioneers, Mars & Msytre reunion gig. Been doing happy hour randomly since then at 2 clubs in SF :happy2:

I'm not perfect with CDJs yet but once I am along with getting a uc-33e, I'm moving to a mixture of laptop and CDJs (just in case laptop dies) cause I'm getting lazy at CD burning/labeling :o

it was as i dancing under the dj booth Tiesto was playing under, he did the jesus pose and sprinkles of dust descended from his armpits onto my face, this was the moment.

for real though its just a natural progression.

haha, reading david micheal's post reminded me of when i first started, i too started on traktor, i was just starting college and i had my laptop at the time, i installed traktor, started learning, i even started playing my first house parties at the time, it was all downhill from there

we would setup this huge guitar amp in my friend's living room, i'd set my laptop on there and hook them up and play all night while we got drunk... wow that was so long ago now that i think about it, 7 or 8 years ago, time flies when you're having fun

ive always been doing it but didnt decide to buy equipment before i had money for some real stuff. i sold it now tho after 6-7 years.

i actually started with traktor too. pirated version of course. i had a bunch of pirated mp3s too. then after using the pirated version of traktor for a while, a notification pops up saying that it'll delete all my mp3s if i don't stop using the pirated version! :nervous:
i was so scared. i immediately uninstalled traktor and started saving for proper gear. :toothless
also since getting proper gear i haven't used a single pirated mp3 to dj with.

Well i guess i just started off DJ'in naturally. I've been to a couple of clubs in my local hometown, watching them scratch, and do remixes. My favorite part was the scratching. It's just like pure raw music. I also tried using softwares like Traktor Scratch, Ableton Live and Reason 4, meh, but i couldn't master it. guess i still need more training. Does anyone like to do remixes or songs on vinyls rather than laptops?

Back in '96 I had a friend I was in highschool with that just picked up a proper setup and his cousin had been doing it for years. So I had access to all kinds of proper knowledge and quality tools. Id trainwreck for a while then started to get my ear to work right. In the meantime Id slowly build my record collection and get my own setup sorted.

It always looked interesting to me. At that time, couldnt afford it. I started collecting CDs and ripping them on to my comp. One day, came across OTS CD Scratch.. the original 1200 lol. That got the juices flowing but definately wasnt enough to interest me much more. It was fun to screw around tho.

Few years later, a guy I work with happens to be a DJ, and has been for a few years. He gave me a few points and let me play around on his equipment. Months later, after feeling more confident with the basics, I knew I was ready to get my own eq. Instead of vinyl, I went with CDJs.

I think it'll be my 3rd year DJing. Love every moment of it still. Should have bought my eq sooner and didnt marry my wife. Oh well.. at least I can still sneak away and mix a few tracks every night :D

Listened to DJ doboy mixes and was obsessed with how the songs flowed together. Later learned that my best friends cousin owns the largest mobile DJ companies in california. I convinced my parents to by me some crappy TT's n a mixer for my next b-day, and then it was history.
