theres a guy here in reno who goes by the name of 'd6' who does not use headphones and spins a mix of breaks, electro and dubstep. he uses vinyl and cdjs.

ive seen him spin live at a few parties here and dont ing understand it. i mean i do, but i dont understand how his mixes are cleaner then most djs in reno and his sets are unreal. haev yall seen anyone else mix without headphones and actually rock a club?

Never seen someone do this, but with a little bit of pre game work CDs shouldn't be hard.

Step 1: edit every track to be the same BPM or edit in BPM changes inside of a song.
Step 2: edit every song so that it starts exactly where you want to drop it

Not much to it for simple mixes

For EXTREMELY BASIC mixing all you use the headphones for is beat matching anyway.

So as long as he knows when to press the button, he'll be ok.

Dunno about vinyl though. :conf:
He has a photographic memory of each track?

I recall Nem mentioning mixing off of the needle sound in a sample of his upcoming DJing guide. Maybe he's just really experienced and can do that sort of thing, or just knows his tracks extremely well?

I agree, though, it that much more difficult to do with vinyl where you don't have the luxury of editing your tracks.

for the most part he uses only vinyl. from what ive seen he uses the levels on each ch.

try it for yourself....
meters tell you where the beat on the start of the vinyl is.... for an intro the pulse/flash of the meters should enable you to pitch it roughly...
open the fader, ride the pitch.... by this point a lot of djs usually have the hones off and are using the monitors only anywayou.

If youve written the bpm or a +/- pitch on the sleeve/centre it makes it even easier....

ive done it before when headphones have broken (f******ing piece of hdj1000s i mentioned god knows how many times)

Using meters seems like another good exercise to try. Too bad my mixer (original Nuo4) doesn't have dedicated channel ones, but I guess using the cue/PFL one would work equally as well (if you're cuing with no headphones anyway).

~It's a bit like those people, when they mention they beatmatch while driving: wipers beatmatching the white lines on the tarmac, etc... You can beatmatch using visuals, in that case, vu-meters...

Or trying to sync your turn signal to the guy in front of you at a light.

When I first sarted mixing, for about 2 or 3 minutes after mixing I'd be listening to everything and analysing the speed and frequency of repeat without being able to help it. Sort of trying to beatmatch the sounds of life.

It was cool!

+1 to syncing everyday objects frequencies to one another.

I saw Cassius at Pacha Ibiza (2005) and he was mixing (mainly vinyl) all night without headphones. AFAICS he was using the meters (the mixer was some huge modular unit with foot tall led meters) and I suspect the mixer had the option to output the cue to the booth (just like my vestax PMC 55!!! :D )
