If it is already IN the rules, then why all the fuss to make a NEW rule based on avery's actions?
Edit: besides, the rules are more clearly defined now such that this statement was drawn up based on avery's actions:
"An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the goaltender's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make a play,"
This action was not specifically in the rule book, and even if avery was being an ASS if you listen to many professional opinions (its all over the media)...avery technically did not break any rules, because the specific action is not in writing. now, if you feel like the ref could have INTERPRETED the original rules to align with avery's action, thats on the ref to make the call. But according to the professionals, avery was simply being an , and nothing further. (until today, in which the specific action can no longer take place without penalty.) |
he didn't break a rule that provided a penalty to the team. He did break a rule that would give him a 10 min. misconduct penalty. The 10 min. penalty wouldn't put the team down a man. The new interpretation of the rules would now put the team down a man. |

true, but thats an extreme measure. I think avery's actions were difficult to interpret by the ref's because it NOT in the rule book. There wouldnt be such a rush to MAKE a rule if there wasnt room to wiggle in terms of interpretation. The league obviously thought it was an move and wanted to make sure it didnt become a trend. Fine by me, because I would be infuriated if some dude did that to lundqvist. haha no one needs to convince ME that avery is an ;) But to compare pissing and waving a stick is two different things. I could see avery doing both, tho. lol!! |
haha Yeah... In my opinion, they did the right thing, the refs, in not calling it... I just think one of the Devs should have layed him out for that one... If Stevens were still playing, he woulda ;) But yeah, not calling it (since it's not a "penalty") was a smart move... Otherwise all the ass-hat Ranger fans (not you, since you at least have knowledge of the game and a view besides "Rangers rule, Devils suck") woulda been claiming an unfair match and too many calls for the Devils... lol... |

Sean Avery also whipped out his stick and waived it in front of one of the Olsen twins too. He shot and scored.... between the legs even :p
You'll see lots of players try and bend the rules; it's high stakes time, and it'll only get worse, imo. Avery gets points for trying to find an edge, kind of like Roger Neilson used to do in his coaching days. But with Sean Avery being Sean Avery he is under the microscope enough as it. |
