What do i want 2 be when I grow up? I want to be a producer of trance and other electronic genres and spin lives..
therefore, Im asking you Djs how did you get started? |

all I can say is that listening to PvD I got myself into the DJ Scene. He inspired me to be a DJ! ;)

Yeah, cause of him I'm taking an real big interest in that.
Right now I can't do too much cuz I got no cash, so its pretty lame, but I'm just mixing songs for myself on Mixmeister. Crossfading pretty much, but I try to come up with some cool ways to do it, and beat match as often as I can...the program is very basic...but...we all gotta start somewhere, right? |

That`s how I learned. I learned much with Traktor. also ABT taught me much! too

I too am looking to do this for a living. I decided this past month to not register for my classes next semester at my college and instead get a full time job. This is to save up money for some TT's and also to save up enough money to one day attend Full Sail University, and major in recording arts, which will hopefully be the final step towards my dream. :)
But other than just throwing yourself into your goal head first, you gotta listen to the music, and get involved in the music. I'm going today to apply for a job at a local recording studio. I don't care the job I get, and I don't care that it's not a Trance or techno studio. I only know that it will put me that much closer to the music scene.
I thik you just gotta have that attitude and you goals and dreams will be realized.
Trancer85, it seems that you and I are very close, experience wise and goal wise. Who knows, we might spin together one day 10 years down the road at Gatecrasher, lol. :D

To make the grade :
.You need to have passion about music
.You need to play tunes that mean some-thing to you, Touch your feelings
.You need to play the tunes you want to play ( sounds daft but its easy to play a tune just because "tiesto" has played it )
.You need balls
Thats the rules i follow. |

I dont agree with what you said, except for the first and last point. First of all, when you get hired or asked to do a gig or you ask to do it for them, chances are, you will probably be playing to a crowd of people. So if you know your crowd, you try to play what they want to hear. Not playing what they want will usually have no one turning out for your next gig, and most likely, people will be bored and will not dance. Playing to the crowd is important.
Fine play songs you want to play, but lets say someone wants to hear Urban Train, but you hate urban train with a passion, do you play the record, or not play the record? Gain a fan, or loose a fan. make a choice.
One more thing, djs dont need balls to play! Sandra Collins, Dj Mea, Dj Rap etc etc...:thepirate |

| someone once told me "i think that if you can match a beat than you have a chance of being a DJ..." which is pretty much true but you gotta have the love for trance music and you need to make things happen for yourself by getting out there to clubs and asking if they need another dj. start at small trance clubs that dont get much buisness. ask the right person and you might get the gig, thats the easiest way to becoming a dj. if they dont need you than they dont need you but atleast you gave it a try. anyhow thats what i'm doing right now. hope it works. |

| if you're doing it for fun then lots of practice.. if you intend to be world class dj like Tiesto or someone then you probably shoulda been into music more when yoiu were a toddler... these guys have music in their veins.. |

In order to make it as a dj,you have to find some way to sound different from the rest of the dj-horde.Just being able to mix good and playing original and good tunes isn't enough.
One example is Maurice Fulton,who always brings alot of burned CD-Rs filled with drums,hihats,basslines,samples and accapellas that he uses in his sets to make them more varied.Or you can do it Tenaglia and PvD-style,and make your own special remixes/reworks of your tracks just before a gig.That way you can make the tracks you play sound totally different.Also,scratching and flipping the fader back and forth between the decks during build-ups like Eddie Halliwell and Tom Harding does works well. |
