um, no. you want a rubber band of some kind. something elastic. a wire coat hangar is a terrible idea. trust me, i found out the hard way ;)

but yes, there should be somewhere else to tie it, definitely not on that hose thing.

Im talking about a temp fix. Of course rubber is perfect if its going to be there for a while. That exhaust is toast. A wire hanger will at least insure it doesnt burn up until he gets to the muffler man. Plus the extra noise will make sure he gets it sorted sooner.

actually i don't think it was the tire jack. it was that long wrench you use to take the bolts of tires. either way they bent the out of it trying to remove the muffler. kind of pissed me off. and then they wanted money for helping us out. but i didn't have any to give them, nor did i really want to.

dude no way they bent it by trying to remove the exhaust.. you know that bar is a bit bent on the ends right?

those things are sooo strong... you can stand on it with all your weight on one side and it will still hold.

Happened to me once with a 5.6 litre. I used to drive an 85 Mercedes 380 SL with a 560 engine swap (that thing was a lemon from the get-go). Eventually, the exhaust cracked before the cat, and it sounded insanely loud.

It also become quite a polluter at that point, and was thoroughly unhealthy, as it seems as the un-reduced toxic emissions were swirling up in the cabin (it was a roadster), and I recall noticing myself getting quite...tired after several minutes of driving.

Carbon monoxide poisoning? If ever there was a reason to get a new car, that would be it :nervous:

...or just weld the exhaust back (which is what we wound up doing).

But that's exactly what it was. I was 18 at the time (this was in 2001), and I really just wanted to roll around in the world's meanest sounding Mercedes, so I did my best to find some way around it. I consulted my doctor and my high school Biology teacher in the hopes that it wasn't nearly as bad for me as I thought it could be.

But yeah- very bad.

Heh yea. Good to see you didn't consider death as "not too bad" :wtf:

You need a new muffler. Go pick up some cheap thing from a junkyard with similar dimensions (or off the same make/model if you can) and hit up some family-run exhaust shop.

For the time being, tie it up with something METALLIC like several windings of wire or a coathanger (or plumber's tape if you know what that is... metal strap with holes every inch or so). If it's near the engine then you'd be hard pressed to find a rubber strap that'll take the heat for any period of time. And for the love of all that is good and holy don't tie it to something on teh car that has fluid running through it. I see fuel send/return lines there and something else... just be smart about that one.

When I threw different headers on my mustang ('73) the rest of the system didn't quite line up, so I had to drive it to a shop to get it refitted... with open headers. I just tied it up with some bailing wire. It was rightously loud. Went to a gas station on the way and people just glared at me.

yeah ive literally done just that, however its not the muffler (or silencer/tailpipe as us brits call it lol) that needs replacing, its the middle section that needs to be replaced (well thats what this mech head said, he used technical jargon to describe it - its knackered)

he managed to get me a quote on the middle section -that expansion box or whatever its called for £38 and he wont charge me for fitting because of the previous weld job, i just hope he does a better job of it the old git lol
