this will be my virgin experience with DEMF, my friends from atlanta went last year and have not stopped talking about it since. they didn't even go to miami this year b/c they had such an amazing time at DEMF last year and it costs way less they said!!

and since my muscial tastes are ever changing and i'm listening to more of what DEMF has to offer i can't wait to get out there! i'm going for the whole weekend. gonna bite the bullet and take that tuesday off so i can catch from what i've been told the best parties which are monday night!!!

my students can survive without me, hell, i'm sure they prefer it. remember when you would walk into class and there was a sub???? you would be like, YES!!! lol, anyways, i'm there and i can't wait!!! sunday school for degenerates was just a small taste of what i'm told i'm gonna get at DEMF. but please those that have been please tell us more, ryan???? give us an insight pretty please :)

i know we're getting konrad black//cassy//tenaglia//zabiela out here in denver for memorial day weekend - so yeah i wouldn't be surprised to see some of these guys out on the west coast before or after demf...

DEMF is the - Kris hath spoken. :) Been three times - 04, 05, and 06. My vacation is effed up right now due to my boss so I'm working to decide between DEMF 08 and Lawler/Dubfire sunrise set/Nic F & Luke Fair boat cruise in July in Toronto.

Richie playing the Beatport tent on Sunday night is a big thumbs up from me. He kills that thing! And Marco Corola - found that out earlier today. Now where's Ambivalent and Adam Beyer? Bring them out Paxahau!

Deadmau5 does stick out badly in that tent - I saw the guy in Dec 07 in Windsor and it was a good show but all this egotistical bull is wearing on my appreciation of him and I think I've held out longer than most in supporting him. At least he's a good example of "what not to do" when starting out - aka act like a prick and alienate any appreciative EDM fanbase you have. You're supposed to be THANKFUL for what you have - and he's def not showing it from what I've seen.

Back to the topic - techno rules, everything else drools. :) VIVA LA DEMF!

DEMF is fun *because* it isn't a highroller Miami-esque shindig. It's an everymans "I love techno" festival. Hart Plaza is right on the Detroit river in downtown Detroit - the Ambassador Bridge is literally 10 blocks away to Canada. There are a vast assortment of stages - tents, underground, above ground, etc with crazy lineups from the unknowns to the bigger names. The main stage has the DJ perched above a large bowl style seating - dancing area aplenty.

Then there are the afterparties. These parties seem to get a free pass because they can go until 5-7am depending on the venue. I've been to a sold out Deep Dish show at Bleu one year and then at a dirty warehouse party with DJs till 10am another time. The typical festival day goes like this:

Noon - Festival starts
Noon-Midnight - drinking, DJs, laying out in the sun, eating
Midnight - Festival ends
Midnight-2am - Big Club Party w/ Headliners like BT, Deep Dish, etc (Bleu, State Theatre, etc) yeah, you do get non-techno a lot at some of the bigger shindigs
2am-dawn - warehouse afterparites, hotel parties, etc
dawn-noon - sleep

Repeat the cycle

DEMF is also cheeeeeeeap. $40 for a weekend pass, tons of cheap places to eat near Hart Plaza, and hotel rooms running around $80/night for a two bed stay blocks from the Plaza. Afterparties run between free and $30 max from what I've seen. And there are literally 10-15 afterparties a night ranging from locals to the big guys.

It's the only weekend I tell folks to visit my hometown - the ONLY one. It's also the one weekend you will see CROWDS of people wandering downtown Detroit - this never happens except for DEMF it seems.

One note of caution - DO NOT TAKE A TAXI IN DETROIT. Normally, there aren't many of these and folks seem to come out and scam festival goers. The drivers are normally NOT LICENSED and will try to charge you ridiculous sums of money for a ride. Most venues are within walking distance from the hotels/plaza - WALK there in a group or find a friend with a car. I warned some out of town friends of mine about this phenomenon and told them to call me if they needed a ride. They didn't listen and ended up in the effin' ghetto at 4am and I had to rescue them, lol.

Oh yeah, and the music is good. :)

Hope this helps!

Trust me, it's going to be a hard choice - depends on if Northwest can let me use my flight credit in July rather than May. I will know by tomorrow I hope.

Lawler is my fav DJ of all time and he's coming back from a few year slump AND not coming to Denver this summer so it is tempting....
rizo
was looking at the travel/hotel costs and its not that bad but then i remembered its the weekend of ETD POP and I already promised a friend I would take photos for him since its his first time on the main stage :)

DEMF is the best festival I've been to hands down. It is $40 for the whole weekend for world class talent and half the acts never travel to US. The vibe is great there was an 80+ year old lady going around in her Rascal right to the front of stages get up hold on to the rail and dance for 12 hour straight no joke. Meet some of my favorite people in detroit last year.
Basically if you like your music dirty and you like the underground feel DEMF is for you. After parties are dark sweety and in what looks like it could be a crack house. You really get a good feel of Detroit and the origin of Techno.

lol, I actually really like D-6 - Printing Russia...more than just about all of D5's stuff.

It can be a little chilly at night and it can rain (but it's done that once in all the time I've gone). Shorts are cool but I usually wore jeans. You can wear a bathing suit top but this isn't Miami weather, lol.

If I go, I'll be going to H&M for sure - none in Colorado and it's my personal addiction in life. :)

Found out Armin is playing at Bleu on 5/22, Thursday before Festival. Some afterparties are up but nothing spectacular yet.
