| If u don't live in a big city, like New York, Chicago etc, or a very small rural town, u need a car in America. We all can't live in the city, so most of us need cars to get around. Besides, I love driving around in my Mach 1 Mustang...its like riding around with a hard on as I blow by all the slow ass vehicles, plus its freedom! I don't have to wait in the cold, heat, whatever for some stink ass bus with a bunch of psychos on their begging for money. Now bring on the jokes cause of the Mustang :D |

i'm dying to move somewhere where i can get everywhere i need to go on foot/bike/public transport. it's not just gas prices, either. i get terrible anxiety when i have to travel on freeways in heavy traffic or bad weather or late at night, and i'm sick of paying out the ass for car repairs.
not to mention, $207 car payment + $83 car insurance + $180 gas = an extra $470 i'd have every month. i would HAPPILY apply that to a more expensive rent payment to live in a big city.
and there is literally no way for me to get to my current job on public transport. |

first off, everyone can either chose to live in big cities, or to demand communities that are more densely populated. if people stopped buying houses with 1 acre lots and demanded houses on 5000 sq feet lots, builders would build on smaller lots. the fact that people chose to live in suburbia means they weighed the consequences of their choices. so when gas prices rise they have little sympathy from urban dwellers, and little standing to actually argue that gas prices are killing them. they chose to live that lifestyle. so deal with it. you my friend fall neatly within that group of suburban dwellers. your mustang story lends support to this conclusion. |

The reason that buses are filled with less-than-genteel folk is that the upper class people all have the mentality of "only psychos, criminals, and poor people ride the bus" -- so then the vast majority of them don't ride it.
The mentality perpetuates the exact situation that it deplores. :p |

Suburban development is a joke in the US. Everybody grew up thinking the good life had a two story house with a lawn involved, so communities developed as such. Strip malls, endless parking lots, chain stores/restuarants/shops. Couldn't go anywhere unless you have a car.
Developers didn't think about the fact that these communities rely on cars just a little too much. Without cars, these communities cannot function. Plus, they are boring as . Communities entirly built on consumption with no real basis to hold people there. No wonder kids are so depressed in suburbia. |
