You know your dude!
im seriously impresssed!
you really master the bass in your songs more than anything.
but what i neglected to mention befor was that i am acually a metal guitarist!! i have had some serious back problems latley and took up electronic music as a past time, i had started with basic midi (easy drummer) for my rock and metal stuff and then moved on to battery 3 and it kinda developed from there. i have been in the game for 2 months now and its fun to play with sounds and stuff ;) i know NOTHING about djing could u give me a load down of the basics? i havent understood the web explenations.
i admire your school to i would love to learn stuff like that.
Kevin_Cheung
DJing can't really be taught on the internet.

You just need to buy the gear and practice. Best thing is to get someone you know to show you how to for a few hours and then just practice at home after that.

The things you need to develop:
1) Ear training
2) Understanding electronic music song structure

If you can beat match, can pick the right tracks and you know your tracks well enough, you shoudl be a good DJ.

The rest is just do whatever you want kind of thing, as long as it sounds good.

What sequencer / DAW are you using? And what synths are you using?
BOOsTER
I am quite impressed too ;) seriously the use of sounds is interesting.

To point out a negative...the kick is over powering I think and the rest of the track gets sucked by that.
I would say that unless you're aiming for really minimal kind of sound the track needs a distinctive hook...

otherwise it's interesting ... well speaking of electric nunchuku...

now let me play the other track :)

payback is indeed a bitch :P anyway this track is a bit muddy...I think that you have a lot of ideas and you're very creative...now it's time to work on making the sound of your production clearer...but that will indeed come with practice.

One advice to you, try to not lose focus while working on your tracks.

No offense :) the mistakes I've pointed out are really minor :)
Kevin_Cheung
No offence taken.

The only people that make us better are those that speak the truth.

I don't have monitors yet. I use computer speakers, and good headphones and bring my mix to school to listen to. It's quite annoying actually.

The Nunchuku song is supposed to be a little strange feeling. I originally started and was going to make it Techno but it became more like Tech house by the end.

If you listen to the other tracks below that, they're not as well composed, but the sound is crisper, that's because they both came from Reason alone. I'm now rewiring Reason into Pro Tools. Naturally doesn't sound as crisp but I quite like it. Sounds more like non-electronic stuff.

But definitely, I think if I was about 15% better I would be having stuff released. Just that little polish that's lacking.

By the way, what you mean by don't lose focus? Can you tell I lost focus or something?
BOOsTER
losing focus means that you spend weeks perfecting this little synth sound...but then you don't have enough creativity to finish the rest of the song...that's just an example...

I think you're sometimes losing focus with trying hard to come up with something unique...and then the production quality is where your train gets out of the town...get it? :)
Kevin_Cheung
No it's not me losing focus. I think it's just because I don't have monitors.

I'm using crappy altec lansing computer speakers, which could probrably do high frequencies and lows, but not the ultra lows and low mids. I couldn't hear all the muddy bass you were talking about until I listened to my mix on my school's far fields. So with my current setup, it really takes a while before I get my mix to sound right on different sound systems.

As to making it interesting, I think everyone strives for that.
JohnWright
Sounds good on monitors here mate, even throught the myspace player! The bass sounds are 100%. I'll have a flick through all the tracks you've got up there now! Nice work!
Kevin_Cheung
Haha Thanks John!

Add me on MySpace please!

It really depends on what speakers you hear them on even if they're monitors.

My school far fields are gigantic beasts ported with 6 ports in them,. On those the bass sounds really oomphfy and muddy (probrably 40 / 50Hz and below). So I ended up rolling up 40 Hz and down on Electrik Nunchuku.

I haven't done that to "Payback's A Bitch" yet though.
Mayhem Master
Dude i know it mite sound weak to you dj dudes but all my is done though cubase i literally started about 2 months ago. all my stuff is done through cubase and all the synths drums ext are VST's.
i started for a bet! (my genre of choise is Metal, rock and i preform allot of acoustic sets for cash.) but electronic music has really grown on me and makin music is somthing i love to do so it might as well be a genre where i can control every last detail instead of teaching and bitching at a bunch of dudes for months on end. (i can be a control freak when it comes to my music sounding the way i want it to). Do u make your own synths?

Kevin_Cheung
Yup, I make my own synth sounds.

I rewire Reason into Pro Tools. I use all the synths and samplers in Reason. I really like Thor now. But I use Malstrom and Subtractor as well. The only time I don't make my own synth sounds is when I use hardware synth sampled patches. I use ReDrum to make my beats.

I also have Absynth, really powerful but I haven't mastered that yet. I mostly just use Reason as my synths and drum sequencer.

I really really need monitors... damnit...
Mayhem Master
Kool man,
i have absynth as well and yes. its tricky as ! but like most software it needs some fine tweaking! you get the hang of it and there are some pretty funky synths pads ext that sound great as they are. have you ever used Korg Legacy Cell? thats a beast! it has an interface that looks just like an old fasion korg synth maker and its super easy if u know a bit from befor. i use battery 3 for my drums and that takes FOREVER (i like allot of sounds on my kit) but its so worth it. btw is my form of makin music kida gay or is it an alright method? it works for me...
