I'd suggest Riu Caribe, if you want nightlife. Most resorts to the south are geared towards families and are quiet by 10:00pm.

The beach to the west of Riu Caribe (just past the giant Mexican flag, where the ferry to Isla Mujeres docks)is public and has some huge parties that run into the early morning.

If visiting ruins are something you want to do, Tulum is great and it has a great beach. Skip Chichen Itza, it's a 4hr bus ride into the rainforest and it is really HOT.

I always felt safe around the resort district, the city of Cancun is another story:nervous:

Just take a taxi when you need, they aren't that expensive.

Make sure to hit Senior Frogs....but bring lots of money.

how far is Riu Cancun from Ria Caribe? more importantly, what are the major differences, if any?

also, in terms of attractions, aside from the clubs and the parties, what would you guys recommend? the ruins sounds great! Are there any worthwhile rainforests to check out? pretty much: what are the absolute MUST things we should do/see while we're in Cancun?

thanks guys:gsmile:

I've been twice to Riu Caribe(2007, 2008), and once to Riu Cancun (2007).

Riu Cancun has the upper hand on food (barely), but the beach is much much better at Riu Caribe.

Both of them are full of loud canadian people (i went there to take it easy not being asked 3204823 times if I wanted to learn how to learn the riu dance):p

Riu Cancun, is more centrally located, close to the clubs, so cabbing and bus are useless.

If you don't care about the quality of the beach, hit Riu Cancun, if the beach is important then easily Riu Caribe.

edit: had no idea about the nightlife near Riu Caribe, never heard of it, because everything around there is ruins thanks to the storms in 2006.

when you talk about the quality of the beach, should I be expecting a deserted beach? or are there still gonna be plenty of people on the beach? nearby beaches?

also, someone mentioned the passes that adnan media offers - I did a quick read @ http://www.adnanmedia.com/index-3.html but has anyone purchased this pass before? Props/cons?

merci

Ya know, after thinking about it... If you really are going for nightlife and not doing the "beach thing", I'd go for the Riu Cancun, but it is REALLY noisy (but that's just me...I DO like to sleep sometimes) and I think it costs more than Caribe

Malek is right, the area around Riu Caribe is pretty smashed up, so there isn't the crowds...but if crowds are what you're after..
I really like the beach at Caribe, not much fighting over beach chairs

There is no such thing as a "deserted beach" in Cancun. If a deserted beach (**beach sex**) is what you're looking for I'd recommend Tancah, south of Xel-Ha...good times, good times;)

...I'd rent a car for that, though.

Are you flying Westjet?

I couldn't tell ya, being an American, our government won't let us go to Cuba, a damn shame really:sadgreen:

...But I can tell you that Cancun has really changed (1991-2007), and they have a price structure that is close to New York City, ie: a $500.00USD dinner at Kululcan Plaza, and $30.00USD door for Basic Discoteque.
I used to go and have a "cheap" vacation, not any more.

serious eh, that's exactly what we were looking for, a "cheap" vacation. I was in the states over xmas and i'm heading to norway after mexico, so I really don't intend on spending a lot of money down there.

would you recommend the pre-paid club-pass? how expensive is a regular night out...generally speaking?
