There have been only 4 DJ's/producers that have touched a place in my heart. They are: Mauro Picotto, James Holden, Sasha, and of course Richie Hawtin.
I still remember the first time I saw Richie Hawtin like it was yesterday. It was at Circus, sometime in early 2003. I had never heard of him. It was before I saw James Holden and Sasha live. I was going through a phase where music was getting boring to me. The DJ's that I went out to see didn't blow me away anymore. They all played tracks that were fast-paced and danceable, but the same old tracks that every other DJ played, nothing unique or special. When I decided to go see Hawtin, I asked my friends what kind of music he played. My friends said he plays "minimal" and "different". That was a term that was new to me. I told my friends that just the word "minimal" itself seemed like it would be "boring". My friends laughed and said, "Just listen to him with an open mind".
The night at Circus, before Hawtin started to play, I was already expecting a boring set. When he finally started, his opening track sounded extremely "minimal", but I still kept an open minded. I was so used to hearing harder tracks at clubs, tracks with bass, and over 130 BPM. About 30 minutes into his set, I had already forgotten where I was. I was blown the f*ck away. I was thinking to myself, "I can't believe I have been missing out on music like this that is extremely well thought out and intelligent". The more he played, the more deeper I fell into the outer body experience that he created for the audience. I couldn't even tell where his tracks started or where they ended. Everything he played was just blending into each other… just layers and layers of beats and sounds that somehow created music that was amazing, unbelievable, and put me in awe.
I have only seen Richie Hawtin live a handful of times, and each time was a special treat. He has never failed to amaze me. I am really looking forward to Saturday night. The fact that he is playing with Magda and Heartthrob is an added bonus. Just thinking about Saturday night makes me feel weak in the knees. I can't waittt!!!

| Apparently, Richie Hawtin, Magda, and Heartthrob, are all going to be playing consecutively, and simultaneously, with synchronized visuals, via the "Cube". WTF?????? |

Why is it not stupid?
, everyone in Detroit was talking about how much of a joke it is. |

It took me a while to figure out where the cube was. At first we thought it was the ceiling LED lights since they were in a "square" shape and we joked that we were "interacting" with them.
Eventually I found the cube at near the entrance past the ticket office. It was in a display case and it looked just like the cube in the picture which is similar to the lighting patter on the ceiling.
I don't think the cube was there at the beginning of the night but I could be wrong.
It does seem a little silly but it's all in good fun.
Anybody know the last two tracks played that night in Detroit by Hawtin ? he also played the same last track at DEMF. |

Wait, so all the cube is is just like a disco ball type of thing?
Anyway, the cube has nothing to do with why I wanna see them. |
