What's the context? I think the rear speakers arent all that necessary, but definitely the front 3 if youre sitting as close to the TV as I am.

Hahahaha. I find 2.0 is more than enough for gaming, indeed if you wanna have that precise hearing advantage you need headphones.

and is that pic of WoW? i hate WoW, never played it. and im far slimmer and trimmer than that! :D

I have an immense library of movies and I don't think I've 'enhanced' my viewing experience by having these 5.1 speakers. Tomorrow I'm going to upgrade my VHS (huh?) copy of Saving Private Ryan to DVD and see how things turn out.
The only game I've played with 5.1 is Counter-strike source, and that was a piss poor experience. I'd rather play with Burger King headphones.

Just asking what people think about 5.1 in comparision to 2.0/1, headphones. No recommendations on anything, just opinions.

Well I havent replaced my ultra-cheap and ty speakers I bought for DJing in 2004, so the quality of my sound is average (but still more than adequate) and I think 3.1 is a must. I only have the other 2 speakers because I can, id be more than happy without them.

So yes, I think 5.1 is overated, but not as much as 7.1 ;)

obviously, you get diminishing returns with each speaker past the 2nd. nevertheless. 3.1 is a must. 5.1 is more or less standard, and with reason. I'd rather have 5.2 than 7.1, but that's not to say there are no gains.

5.1 is nice for movies and stuff...great for watching baseball and football games.

but overall music? , front speakers and a sub is all you need

I actually hate watching games in 5.1.

correct--you aren't supposed to listen to music in surround sound unless it was mixed that way. Only people with crappy speakers feel the need to do so.
