i also like watching standup comics on 5.1. makes it feel like you are in the hall/arena/theatre |
considering that is the intention of anything mastered in some surround architecture that would be the point.
Also, 2 discrete center channels is really awesome, but unless you are in the blu-ray/hd-dvd arena, 7.1 is not an option.
And to the op: I would say that with the exception of watching movies, it is useless. |

Hahahaha. I find 2.0 is more than enough for gaming, indeed if you wanna have that precise hearing advantage you need headphones.
and is that pic of WoW? i hate WoW, never played it. and im far slimmer and trimmer than that! :D |
Playing multiplayer FPS in 5.1 is great. I can almost get headshots with my eyes closed |

well, to be fair my onboard sound has 6 outputs that you can configure. but that, there's too many cords poking out of miss ninja as it is! |

i was always happy with just the headphones and a quick flick of the wrist to get sound bearings. |

i think he meant... almost all music is in stereo, so you get no benefit at all from 5.1 for music.
there is downmixing software that will split some frequencies into surround, but it always sounds . |

nothing has two discrete center channels.
7.1 is two fronts, one center, one sub, two side surrounds, and two rear surrounds.
yes, 7.1 is only discrete on blu ray (or hd dvd...bla bla bla), but most receivers matrix it to 7.1, unless you went the home theater in a box route, in which case you may as well be ting in your hands and rubbing it on your ears, anyway. |

I like to have 5.1 in my room. 2.1 is good if you're sitting in the proper listening position but 5.1 can help fill the room with music no matter where in the room you are.
SuspicionVandit, you watched VHSLOL and played counsterstrike...yeah.
I think 5.1 is a must when watching a movie. It provides that feeling as if you were in the scene. Sometimes even surprise you. Also great for games that have proper surround sound support. You need to have the rear speakers actually behind you though. I've seen people just stash all 5 speakers in front of them...:wtf:
Oh and as for music mixed in 5.1...This Binary Universe :) |

definitly. Nice to hear where the enemy is when you can't see the enemy. Nice to hear when a car is going to overtake you from left or right. Excellent to position yourself while playing flight/space games. Nice to feel the sub rumble your guts, nice to feel the ambience elements all around. Useless if you play warcraft and like that. |

| My only experience with surround sound was in a movie theatre and it's cool, but I think 2.1 is sufficient for music. |
