Effective immediately they are charging $20-$60 fuel surcharge within Canada. This in addition to their many other surcharges and high prices.

Thank god for west jet and Buffalo! ;)

I'm pretty sure that the rest of the airlines are going to follow suit given $125 oil and the fact that Goldman just said oil could go to $200.

I'm buying my future contracts now!

i don't know if every airline does this but air canada gives you the option of paying a little more to remove the carbon footprint that you leave be making your flight... cool idea for allyou tree huggers out there

They are also only allowing one piece of baggage and charging $25 for anything extra.

that's not entirely true about the bag surcharge. It depends on the class of ticket you've bought. If you bought the cheapest tango fare then you'll pay for a second bag. The lattitide or higher fares allow extra baggage and have more flexibility with cancellations or changes to the flights. This is pretty much industry standard now, so it's not exactly big news. If you think this is bad you should look at some of the stuff in Europe.

Don't check in online = surcharge
ANY bags = surcharge
etc etc etc.

You can't have your main operating expense increase 60% in under a year and not have a means to make up that raise in expenses. It always cracks me up when people think it's their god given right to fly to vancouver for $99. You can't take the bus for that much, so why should you expect to pay less for a far superior service?

For the westjet fan boy at the top. Would you pay a bit more for an airline that didn't take two planes off the runway this winter? I know I would certainly pay a bit more to be safe. Something to think about anyway.

What you fail to mention however is that even after all the taxes and surcharges in europe you are still getting a one way fare from London to Bratislava lets say for $60... and thats canadian dollars. With no obligation to buy a return fare at that! I dont see anything like that in Canada!

Also toronto to florida with air canada 400-500 bucks incl everything and 25% aeroplan miles.

I priced out a similar flight with united from buffalo for $178 all inc with 100% aeroplan (star alliance) miles.

Until Canadian transport companies (and the government) smarten up i will continue to take my business elsewhere.

So why not just be honest and raise the fare instead of these surcharge scams? The air canada price = $150... after surcharges etc it becomes $400. Thats just not right.

My cousin works for air canada. I know quite a few stories that dont make the news ;)

But Jay...

You have to drive 2 hrs to get to these airports...

I mean go to Buffalo to fly to Florida???

Deal with the border crossing...unfamiliar place???..No way man...

That cheap flight in europe departs and arrives at some airport in the country...

I live close to the airport here and I think the extra coupla hundred bucks is worth the time and effort saved of driving 20 mins to the airport...

We got a notice out at work about this for all who have to travel.

I will just have to fly out of the States. Even if flights go up there, it still won't be as expensive as flying out of Toronto. (depending on where I am going)

2 hours to buffalo and back. Thats like earning $50 an hour or more at a job on a short flight. Factor in the $30 for gas and when you are travelling with others it saves a lot of money FAST! Also a week of parking buffalo is $40, sometimes $20 if u can find a good deal. Compare that to long term parking at pearson that STARTS at $75.

You save especially when you travel overseas. When i went to asia i saved about $900 going out of buffalo. So the 4 hours driving basically was like earning $225 per hour.

And yes flights like ryanair etc in europe go from smaller airports in the burbs but i think thats a good thing. Pearson is a complete mess with people and lineups etc. How nice it is to go through a smaller airport like Buffalo or Stanstead. For example in Buffalo it never takes me more than 15 mins to check in and clear security. Takes a lot of stress out of travelling!!
