| I was watching some late programme on the TV when I came home from work a few weeks back called 'passengers'. This programme had a feture about a mexican trance rave. Basically it was a group of about 20-30 hippies in bleached clothes smoking dope and the DJ called 'goa gill' on the stage talking to the interviewer about how he plays trance. The stuff he was playing was anything but trance! I don't even know how to describe it. Then last night I saw a programme on tv called 'tourist police' in the island of goa. And there was loads of hippies listening to some proper good hard psy-trance . I can't understand where hippies have ever entered trance music. What do u make of it?... |

i think you have encountered a major misconception of what trance is. those people should be smacked for labeling whatever you saw as trance.
on the other hand, i used to be heavily emersed in the "hippie" scene before i got into Trance. It is very similar in that it is also underground and there are a bunch of drugged out people running around being nice to each other. I find the music similar as well in some ways.
I've talked to other "hippies" about this, and now that Phish is gone, hte club and Trance scene is a comfortable substitute for the addictive touring scence that we've lost. I wouldn't be offended by hippies entereing the Trance scene. They are nice people for the most part and many have a great appreciation for the music.
Please let me know if I misunderstood your question. |

| I've always heard ravers on TV called "21st century hippies"...I guess in some ways it makes sense. It's a bunch of people that get together, dance and be nice to each other...just with different music and different drugs. Of course when people make this kind of assumption it makes everyone who listens to trance look like they do drugs, the same thing that happened with people who listened to acid rock and stuff with people thinking they all smoke pot and drop acid. |

ARGH!!! It was DEFINATELY trance people! It's called Psychedelic Trance. Theres WAY more to trance than just the Epic/Uplifting styles you people mostly listen to it. Make an effort to educate yourselves. YOU people should be smacked for your narrow view of whatever you see as trance.
Goa/Psy Trance is VERY popular among "new age" hippies. They are called Goa Hippies and there are tens of thousands of them around the world, so EDUCATE yourselves people!

Goa Trance is one of the earliest styles of trance that developed in the Goa province of India in the early 1990s at the same time that Epic/Uplifting Trance first started developing, so it's JUST as much REAL trance as Epic and Uplifting, even moreso in my humble opinion, because it has always remained truly underground and never really succumbed to the same commercialism that mainstream trance has.

No, I'm sorry that I got a little worked up... It just frustrates me that so many supposed Trance Addicts know so little about the different types of trance and the history of trance which Goa Trance plays a major role in. |
