Interesting observation: why is it that in the 80's during stressful times (cold war) and time of major political turmoil around the world, the music was a lot more bright than it is today?

It seems that music nowdays is soooooooooo.... DARK, depressing, heavy, TOO FRIGGIN EMO! Im not even talking about the crap that radio plays nowdays. I can't even listen to the radio anymore - it's garbage! So, with that rant, I'd like to point out some of the wonderful music that was made in the 80's:

1. Peter Schilling - Major Tom
2. Alphaville - Forever Young album
3. Roland Orzabal - Low Life
4. Tears for Fears - Strange World (ok, that one bit emo)
5. Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin, Rent, West end girls
6. Erasure - Love to hate you, Oh L'Amour,
7. Cars - Who's gonna drive you home
8. Foreigner - I wanna know what love is
9. Vissage - Turn to gray
10. New Order - Blue monday, bizzare love triangle, state of the nation
11. Simple Minds - Don't you forget about me
12. Clan of Xymox - Imagination
13. Yaz - Only you
14. Depeche Mode - all albums through and including Songs of faith and devotion.

...and so much more. So, why does today's music SOUND LIKE SUCH A SH!T FOR THE MOST PART??

sigh. Yes, I'm stuck in the 80s.

It seems like hard times often generate happier, more optimistic music.

As Europe progressed technologically and came out of medievalism and domination by the Catholic church into democracy, secularism, and prosperity, the music got progressively more dissonant and moody.

Weird, huh?

The eighties were the birthplace of some really dark music. Don't forget that Punk, Gothic rock and Gangster Rap were all either born or came into the public eye during the 80s, that's a pretty big rise of dark music.

But to add to your list of awesome 80s tunes.
