A Vindication of the Rights of Woman

I hope I can find some time to read some of her other works, but this is one of the most inspiring books I've ever stumbled upon :)

woman still dont have equal rights, woman get paid less while doing the same job a man is doing, thats not right....woman should make the same. and many men in our society look down upon woman and crack jokes when they dont deserve it. it happens here on these forums.

So? Has anyone heard of a ing union? Just because they are too lazy to make a union and demand better pay just means they are stupid. They're payed less because they let themselves be payed less or because men prefer working with men. Both are valid reasons to be payed less. You do not have a right to be payed the same as the other gender... the market+unions can sort this out fine. Positive discrimination is just as bad as negative discrimination.

I (think I) understand what your point is, pkc, and I can't say I disagree with you in any fundamental aspect of your argument. If anything, I probably just have somewhat different priorities, and I should've added that to me sexism and racism were just as important as nationalism (and more important than religion) because these are some of the problems I have to deal with in daily life (and I'm a white guy, mind you :p).

I do live in a land where women are exploited (and seldom, but not rarely, seen as some sort of "handicapped men"), and being black is almost synonymous with being poor. It really saddens me that, instead of tackling these problems, people often just get on their knees and start praying as if their afterlife could fix what's happening right now. Thus, I'm naturally inclined to give these problems more attention.

I've got to give you that, maybe we're diverting far too much from the original topic :p

Don't get me wrong, I think its complete crap and I'd not shed any tears if all the clerics and wife beaters where stuck in a trench and hosed down with a machine gun.
But, I'm neither able to affect it, is it really my place in the world to dictate what other people's cultures and religions should do?
I really don't think that's what my place is with my current social liberties and economic status is for, it's more a case of maintaining what we have in those luxuries and if others want to achieve that result its really up to them.

Because it won't be seen as 'charitable' to go barging in like a certain retarded male american with their army to 'bring democracy' to the heathens... we all know what comes of that.
Contempt, repression, warfare and exploitation

Democracy and Equality are earned and maintained by ones own hands, not enforced by outsiders

They're also limited by education and the job itself. Before I began working for myself there was a number of glass ceilings I bounced off before I gave up. About 50k a year as a beauty therapist, 80k as a minor/assistant executive and about 110k a year as a sales person/group trainer, neither where going to cover what I wanted, what I thought I was worth so I work for myself and make a lot more.

The biggest problem here though, for both sexes is that for the majority of people who want the big dollars is that they don't deserve it and they're not worth it in the marketplace.
If you pick an occupation which doesn't pay what 'you' think you're worth and what you want to spend annually then you're really only making your own problems.

Nobody is entitled to anything, you have to work and earn it.

as per usual, i can't really say youre wrong there mate :) 'cept for that bolded part, where i say " yes, we have a right to exercise our free speech/trade/UN vote/sporting pressures etc in an effort to force change around the world."

the peoples of this planet will never be free (and let's not get distracted by pedantic definitions of freedom) until they are all housed under the liberal democracy roof. obviously iraq is a total mess, but i still believe afghanistan is a worthy and righteous cause and that governments like the taliban dont deserve anything but western pressure and meddling.

i think cultural relativism is nothing more than a cop out.

I can honestly only assume that you are humouring AGQ there with some intense sarcasm.

Confirm that b/c I'm ready to jump all over you with that post.

Go ahead, not humoring agq. How exactly are you supposed to get them to be payed more if there is a valid difference anyway?

I personally think we need job competency tests. Men and women alike would take the same test. This would eliminate any notion that one is superior to the other. Wages would be assigned depending on the demonstrated knowledge, areas of excellence, and other beneficial skills. There would be no pay difference because it is specifically stated what people at each level, with the different modifiers, are paid.

Thing is, liberal democracies only hang around for short terms of anywhere between 4-12 years, after that they change to a new government of sorts which might not support effective measures.
Tyrannies run on 20+ years, they don't go away until the one up top dies/ousted and they ever so frequently outlast the people allied against them :)

Trade, UN and everything else doesn't really affect 'them' and by them I mean the people up the top, propping up oppressive regimes. All outside forces do when they put in place a picket, embargo or withdraw support (or- military force) for a country they don't like is hurt everyone underneath the governing forces.
That harbours resentment from the majority of the population.
They don't see the economic mismanagement and depredations of their leaders as being the cause of their woes... oh no, they see the people outside the country who put an embargo in place as being the cause of everything craptacular in their little part of the world.
Mostly because its easy to hate a faceless enemy far away than it is to deal with one right next to you. Having been on both sides of an embargo, I can say quite plainly, they really don't work.

What does work is two things-
Communication
Education

These two things actually do far more damage to despots and tyrants than any embargo will ever do. If people talk and if they know what they're talking about, it makes it very, very hard to put in place those softer parts of socio or gender or economic oppression which don't require troops on the street.

If we really want to wreck a tyrant, we don't send in troops or a blockade, we teach and we put up a communications infrastructure :D

u guys are missing the point here .. women are just child bearing vessels.. the only reason they were put on this earth was to re-populate.. nothing else other than that.. also for my leisure which may involve some sick violence :toothless
