i haven't seen any, the one break beat guy from Detroit, Dilemma just moved to florida. plus why the hell would you want to go see breaks that weekend anyways? the whole point of DEMF is to celebrate techno, house and minimal. that would be like going to Ultra to see IDM, lol. |

Really? That's odd. Considering it's called an Electronic Music Festival and they've incorporated artists like Deadmau5 (who I wouldn't really fit in any elitist group of techno, house, or minimal) and Zabiela who is known to throw breaks down occasionally, as well as Dieselboy who is playing dnb... Unpucker that of darkness and shed some light to new genres, that's what I say. ;) We know the purpose of DEMF and what it's original mission statement was, but it's evolved to much more than that.
As for the original poster...there are a few breaks acts playing... Keith Mackenzie is at an afterparty as well as the boys from Outlawed Productions...but you'll have to search on the web for where and when they're playing.
PS. Right off the DEMF page...
| quote: | DEMF ACRONYM
Originally, the DEMF acronym represented "Detroit Electronic Music Festival" in honor of its first host city. To further illustrate the growth and important reach of this culturally definitive, globally significant brand and its mark, the acronym now stands for "Dance & Electronic Music Festival." Speaking to the mission of the festival worldwide and the brand purpose as a whole, (not the geographic location of the first 3 events) now perfectly captures the full impact and powerful meaning of the DEMF. |

Thanks for the insight captain breaks. I know what the acronym is (which on another note you might want to put the DETROIT part in there, since it’s the most important part). I have lived in the Detroit area my whole life, have gone to it every year other than the first, worked alongside paxahau on projects and played the actual festival in 2004. With that please spare me the comical act of thinking you have any insight or knowledge that I don’t have in regards to it.
In order to really understand what the festival is about you have to had to lived it and grown with it. While its focus and artistry has changed a bit from year to year its essence and core has always been to celebrate the birth place of techno and its influence on the world. Booking a few cheesy commercial acts to bring in the shiny shirts will never change the feel and purpose of the festival. Do you personally know and speak to on a regular basis people who work with Paxahau? Ohh that’s right, you don’t and I do. Yes the festival has evolved but only for the reason of stability and economic feasibility.
I am all for opening the ears up to new music. The festival can act and has acted as a great catalyst for this. However my statements still hold true in that there is a time and a place for everything. Why not immense yourself and in the music and culture that the festival holds onto so dearly? Yes there may be a few breaks, progressive, Mash-Up and Dn’B cats playing, but the majority of the festival is still showcasing what Detroit and the people it has influenced do best. Do yourself a favor K Dee and really take advantage of all the influential and amazing tech acts that will be in Detroit because you wont have it like that any other time or place. |

I'm not questioning your passion...just think you're being a bit elitist in regards to what someone should listen to and for what purpose exactly. If you were in some other country at some breaks/dnb(or whatever genre may have been out of your norm) festival and someone told you to that you're practically a fool if you go there and listen to something else, you might perceive it as a bit snobbish. The poster is well aware of the other acts at DEMF and specifically asked where he could go for breaks...not for a lesson on what he's missing. If you want to enlighten people to a new artform, you don't do it by criticizing their current tastes. That's just ing tactless. He specifically asked for something out of the norm and you told him he's wasting his time if he goes anywhere but where you think he should go. Congrats on the namedrop too... it'll look good on the online resume. Watch out for falling names!
P.S.
4.20! Wooohooo! Let's blaze it up, jackass. :p
P.P.S. I think you're cool as hell in person and I'm still greatful for my kickass slap bracelet that I wear out as much as possible..but online man, you can come off a bit crass. Nothing wrong with being passionate about something you believe strongly in...and I'm certainly not criticizing that...this was never about DEMF... it's about the way you talk to people when trying to convey your passion. It can come off a tad condescending....but then again, what the do I know...I like breaks. :stongue: |

Captain Breaks & Minimal Tardo ... sounds kinda cute
Anyways the only reason I reason I even mention the people (and i didn't name drop, no names were mentioned) that I associate with or the experience I may have us to add supporting information to the discussion. I have lived in the Detroit scene since 1998 and to make it seem as if you are educating me about DEMF is rather lame, i mean seriously, come on. I made one simple comment; questioning why someone would want to hear breaks that weekend and you get all postal.
My statement had nothing to do with the credibility or my feelings on breaks whatsoever and I think you took that personal. You say I come off as being condescending yet you come off as being very insecure when it’s concerning anything remotely close to your scene or music. It’s rather funny how you can take a simple one liner and create this big magical ordeal out of it. Relax .. take a deep breath .. I know you have been around just like me but that doesn't mean you need to put on the superman cap.
To sum up what I was saying, which i should have stated in my first post is this:
If you go to a Chinese restaurant ... one of the best in the world .. and your order a pizza .. when they have some of the best Chinese available .. that just doesn't make much sense .. but to each their own.

Look it golber .. piss off. Way to chime in like a little bitch. This is just me and Tolgar having lovers spat and you were not invited. I did give you information, I know all the breaks cats in Detroit .. and guess what .. THERE IS PRETTY MUCH NOTHING GOING ON .. which is exactly what i said. There may be a few people playing but other than that not much. Good luck with your hunt, duder. |

1. Questioning why someone likes something is one thing... saying "why the hell would you want to" is another thing. Don't tell me that's not condescending...on a trance board of all places! Talk about irony.
2. It wasn't one comment. You made comments during the 4.20 Light It Up party post as well. Like the name or not, like the genre or not, people put effort into what they do. At least show some respect before criticizing or poking fun...just like how you got defensive about DEMF. That's just my opinion.

You can say breaks suck all day man, I don't care. You're absolutely free to share your opinion. I think the breaks out there these days suck too..I'm not happy with producers and what they're making. If you listened to my WMC promos...there was maybe one or two breaks tracks tops. It's not about the genre or what we like..it's how you treat others who don't share your opinion. The guy asks about breaks parties in DEMF and you criticize him...not breaks... whether it was your intention or not..it's how it came off. This is an absoinlutely ridiculous argument and I'm not going to spend anymore time on it. Either you realize that, while your intentions may have been pure and good, you came off rude and rough, or we just squash it right now. It doesn't matter to me at the end of the day. Friends tell each other how it is... and my friends are always ready and willing to tell me when I'm a dick..which is about 90% of 50% of the average 33.6% of the time. You do the math...cuz I'm lazy.

If I have already eaten at that Chinese restaurant time and time again...but my friends are dragging me there...and they've added pizza to their menu, you damn well better believe I'm going to try it.
P.S. You owe me another cool slap bracelet for making me type so much. |
