well try craigslist anyway. You can get soem good deals on there and bypass annoying brokers altogehter. All 3 Manhattan apartments that i've lived in, I found myself without brokers. I actually did give a citihabitat broker a chance one time and he showed me places for a few weekends in a row. He had nothing good to show me, the best places I saw I only liked marginally (nothing that made me say OMG I WANT THIS). Trust me, it's possible & def. cheaper to do this yourself. |

West harlem. (do NOT live in east harlem). There are so many renovated places up there now, and even in the heights around Yeshiva U has some great places now. Gentrification is working over harlem.
Where I live its one stop on the express to midtown (a 6-10 minute ride depending on how fast you go). Tons of Columbia students, renovated stores (3 starbucks up in the last few months, wine shops, nice restaurants). Its an up and coming place, and you might not even have to pay $2G. ;)
Great starter area. Molly might agree, her place in harlem is SICK. :eyes: <3 |

Thanks Kell. Yes, harlem is a great option. I live in a nice neighborhood 1.5 blocks from the C/B line - 3 bedrooms, full kitchen, full living room, 2 floors, and a full rooftop garden (all ours). The entire place (i share with two others) is $3k. The only drawback is a slightly longer ride when going downtown, but that's no biggie. |

I've thought about moving to manhattan in a couple of months... but i wouldn't do it alone unless my budget was like 3500 a month, lol. In the meantime though I would recommend the following sites (hopefully not posted already):
Hotpads.com
edit - deleted craiglist :P but hotpads is cool - one of my coworkers found a place (not in nyc though). |

Although i'm sure most of us want to avoid a broker's fee, it's honestly the best option. They really do have the best listings out there and are a great intermediary between you and management.
Nearly all of the non-broker listings I checked out were old, run-down apartments. Plus i'd rather work with an actual building management company with designated building supers than offsite owners who "do it themselves".
It's a steep fee to pay but well worth it and they do most of the work. You just need to make sure you give them a budget (obviously) and your living preferences.
I believe Manhattan broker's charge 15% but it's only a month fee in Queens/Brooklyn. I'll gladly pay that if i'm able to find an awesome place I can see myself living in for 2-3 years. |

| ^ moved up there myself last summer and it makes so much sense, my train is a block away and it connects to the building i work in on 6th ave. i got a bigger apartment then i did when i was in the east village and the area is developing fast...there are a number of columbia students around there as well. in the last couple months pretty much young people have moved in which is good |

my friend may be getting a nice junior bedroom in Astoria soon -- monthly is 1700$, its going to be great because it has a large LR, the 2nd room is going to become a home office :) Long Island City is a great place to look into as well. The only drawback with Astoria is that its mainly served by the N train...and the R if you live closer to Northern Blvd/Steinway. LIC is mainly the N and 7 trains, with the V at 23rd and Ely. 20 min or less into the city. When you think about it, its odd how it takes about 20 minutes by subway to travel from uptown to midtown/downtown in the city as well.
As far as neighborhoods go, i prefer certain areas of Bklyn over certain areas of Manhattan, even the trendy ones. In particular I love Carroll Gardens, Bklyn Heights, Williamsburg, Park Slope, areas near Prospect Park. I find there to be such character and such a sense of community in Bklyn i dont feel in other places but thats just been my own experience. |

I went in my kitchen one day and opened the microwave. There was a piece of bacala sitting on the turntable that must have been in there for at least two days. I can't wait to get out of this hellhole. |

so the final word is:
76th b/w 1st & 2nd (upper east side)
1 bedroom: 1800/month (1 floor walk up)
15% fee
I wish I could of looked somewhat more because it was only two full days! I always had in my mind the competition out there. My GF was happy but I told her will you be happy next week after we move in?? Well I will find out in due time :wtf:
We both have cars but maybe deciding to keep one with us in the city if reasonable. How are parking rules in that area like can you leave a car on the street 24/7 or is that highly unlikely? |
