Not everything you plug in uses standby though. |
More than perhaps you realise. PCs, most monitors, phone chargers, washing machines, TVs, VCRs, DvD players, routers, PC speaker setups, games machines...... the list goes on.
And while we all might say that we religiously turn all of these things off at the plug, a majority of us do not.
A study carried out by the Energy Savings Trust in the UK proved that 20% of all energy consumed in the workplace was due to 'standby' consumption.
Ever been the last one out of the office at night? You switch off all the lights, and look behind you to see a sea of LEDs and what not. This is standby energy being consumed unnecessarily.
In the UK we're addressing this issue. I guarantee (because there is money to be made in selling solutions) that the USA will soon pick up the ball an run with it. |

So you are saying that having a plug, plugged in = standby power? That is the biggest crock of . It isn't pulling power except for the LED if it has it. So some of your is just trying to make it out to be bigger than it really is. Phone chargers don't have standby modes. They are either in use, or not. And claiming that 1 LED uses a lot of electricity is bull too. Why? You can power that same LED with an AA battery for months. And that is literally 1.5w. So you use 3watts of electricity a year at MAX for 1 device. Ok ok so you multiply it by the number of people using it and it adds up, I know. Consider the fact that you can save more energy by doing other things. There is a fine line of being a crazy nazi idiot that wants everything to be 100% off, and finding that good balance of being green without being more burdensome and spending elsewhere. Just like those s that say "drive 5 miles to save 3 cents a gallon. You realize you save literally 30 cents on 10 gallons of gas? You need to look at the real cost benefit.
And the routers thing is a crock of . It is never in "standby" mode. It is ALWAYS on as it is designed! Most people that use a router, have a use for one. Someone is online pretty often, and most of the time.
I will say, however, that I do agree that SOME speakers (read: really very few if you consider that most people have ty UNPOWERED speakers, so therefore require NO EXTERNAL power), pretty much all dvd players, stereo systems, game consoles, and TVs are guilty of this.
The washer and dryer thing I find to be a bit far fetched. So many of these studies aren't taking into account that most people don't have brand new appliances. I am not saying that the NEW stuff doesn't have this, but do you have a brand new washer or dryer? How many people do you know that replace them cause they are just a couple years old? I don't knwo anyone.
Seriously, people like you, take these studies too damn literal and don't really look at the studies more closely. Show me this study, the raw data and methods and all that, and we will see. If you examine most of these studies they aren't taking more things into account to give a more accurate and less narrow view of the agenda behind it. |

| Oh and as they say your "carbon footprint" needs to be smaller. That means not buying NEW GADGETS and what not that DISPLACE your energy usage into something else. Seriously. |

| While I support people finally attempting to do the right thing, the whole "green" and "carbon footprint" thing has quickly become more of a trend than anything. Though, I suppose that that's a good thing. |

Not really when you consider that the initiatives USUALLY result in larger carbon footprints before to manufacture these new products. The energy saved, has been displaced by a company that just started using all that electricity elsewhere. Displacement is not helping. |

Best solution: buy less STUFF.
But people don't want to do that. That want to buy some NEW STUFF that lets them feel "green."
:p |

I know. It is so ing stupid to buy something just to APPEAR to be green. *cough*priusowners*cough* |

I think you have a few fair points, but you are missing the point I make about office equipment left on.
The savings may be small, but when added together will all add up. I know LEDs by thier very nature consume low amounts of energy, but they show the devices left on are also consuming more power than just the LED alone.
The solution is not for everyone. But I know that when I go to sleep, I hit my master button and I save energy. And money.
Go to google.co.uk and type in energy saving. Searck UK results only. We're not all doing it for fun.....! |

Goodness, I worked a "green earth" convention this past weekend on behalf of the company I work for, and half that is so bogus! "Going Green" = people who have too much money and don't know what to do with it.
I mean seriously, you'd look at some of the products they offered and when you actually took a REAL look at it, you'd see that there wasn't anything about it that made it "greener" than anything else! It was like "are you ing kidding me? you slap a "green" slogan on it, and consider that saving the earth?!"
I'm willing to bet half that stuff that's "green" is more polluting to make than what's not.
Plus some idiot wanted 50$ for a plain cotton dress. I told him he was nuts. But then some stupid lady walked up behind me and bought it because she felt "greener" doing it. I told her she was nuts too. |

Office equipment, with regards to what? Specifically copiers, have a timeout that they SHUT OFF. Literally shut off. The power is not "cut" in the sense that these devices do, but there are reasons for that. With regards to PCs, they are either on, or off. VERY few people within offices use the standby feature. Most don't really even know wtf it is.
The LED does not show that a device is ON necessarily. It all depends on what it is. If it is audio or video equipment I will 100% agree, except with speakers because of the reason given previously.
Also, I am not saying you shouldn't do your part. I am glad you are trying, but next time you want to do something that APPEARS to be green, think about EVERYTHING involved with acquiring that device for your home, the manufacturing energy costs, etc. If those costs are all MORE THAN just doing your due diligence of just using a power strip you already have and flipping the switch, then it is a bad idea to buy it. ;) |

I guess I should've phrased it better. They've succeeded in getting people taking the initiative to do what they perceive is better for the environment. I'm not saying that "green" ideas are good, just that it's good that people are actually doing what is (perceived to be) good. |

Sara, I can't tell you how much the "green" initiative is such a farce. The following is a video that PROVES how ing STUPID and uninformed people are. And how hippies and environmentalists are fear mongers. |
