LionsLair as an old man?

Can I just say the 360 is a more powerful platform for gaming. (I own both) Not only that the controllers are better and online is better.

From a raw power point of view, this is wrong. The problem though, is realizing the full potential of the cell processor will be about 5 or more years. The PPC platform (The gimped Power5 cpu in the Xbox360), just has the tool chains that are quite mature to take advantage of the cpu NOW. So once the cell cpu potential is realized, it will be MUCH more powerful than the 360.

Can I just say you stole my torro!

Besides it's a lot of magic the hype around the cell when used for gaming.

Even the lack of dedicated AA memory kills it for me.

There are many programming techniques that could easily render the need for AA memory useless. Cache is usually expensive, but manufacturing a lower volume (as there would be less of these cpus) cell cpu with higher caches, where a small portion is dedicated to AA operations, could render the need for external AA memory useless. Especially since cache is really fast.

New cell = not PS3 though.

The big bottle neck in three words on the cell is the small and shared L2 cache.

Also the shared SPEs get tied up for pishy simple things. And only 6 can be used at a time.

Also why you can open a blade to play mp3 on a xbox and change the tune playing (your choice) but on the ps3 you can only quit the game?

Damn they limited it more than I originally thought they did. Mind you though, I haven't read up on the cell since before the PS3 was out and when the Cell cpu was pretty new. Maybe they will fix these things in later iterations? Hopefully. If they do, it will probably help a lot. A small l2 is dumb, and to compound it by sharing it is even worse.

Also dunno the details but I think since one cell is dedicated to controlling the rest I'm guessing the parallelism is directed (load shared) in the hardware.

Which means the code will inherently hold back the efficiency of the processor by not being truly parallel.

Because MS has a patent on the way it's implemented in game systems :p

Tools and memory availability to patch/implement custom soundtracks has been supported on PS3 since FW 2.20. Burnout Paradise gets custom soundtracks with the next update, and other individual games will implement it, but it won't be universal the way it is on Xbox 360.
