[Review] DEMF 2008 aka most insane crackfest weekend.. EVER!

I'm home first out of the NYTA's so I'm gonna start it now. Especially since I don't feel like working :(.

Movement day 1:
As soon as I walked in I was noticing TA's all over the place without needing to text them. Clovis, Jenny Pie, Rjt, Lucid, Beema, Jay RP, Blake, Inconspicuous, Gypsy Girl, Techniquez, his roomate dunno his TA name, Infinitetrance, & epdarks. <3

This was definitely the most exciting day of the festival and I lost alot of energy at this party. Well worth it. Beatport stage rocked alot too.. Saw Justin Long, Joris Voorn live - his 2nd or 3rd track was Robert Babicz - Dark Flower (Joris Voorn Magnolia Mix) *died*. Then went to the main stage for DBX Live = This dude is fuking SICK! & Moby's closing set.

There was someone that was going to a festival in Europe and wanted to know how Moby did.. Well, if you DON'T see Moby, I will personally kick your ass. He was absolutely insane and worth the 40$ alone. All his songs had tons and tons of energy. Dropped a sick remix of Body rock and Basment Jaxx - Where's your head at! The crowd was AMAZING. Moby had us all right at his fingertips. Never have I seen a closing song as ridiculous as the one that moby played. The song went NOWHERE but just the style of it [had this main techy sound pounding every second and slowly getting faster, faster, faster!!!!] Moby throughout his entire set got up on the tables just to interract with the crowd. At the very end he held up both fists together while everyone in the crowd was fist pumping to the song. It was nuts. Totally looked like were were Hailing Moby

Moby plays NOTHING like the Moby you see and hear on TV. All the TA's that had never seen him do a dj set were shocked.

Movement Day 2:
Because of the crazy afterparty I woke up late and got to the festival pretty freaking late. I was outside waiting in line to get in and we realize we had to go back to the hotel to drop something off. As we're walking back to the hotel [right across from the festival] We hear Michael Cassette - Shadows Movement [Komytea mix]. My boyfriend and I were shocked to hear this at a "Techno" festival. We knew it had to be one person and we guessed Kenneth Thomas. By the time we came back into line and *finally* made it in we ran to the Pioneer dj tent and KT was fuking bowing!. We were so pist off! AHH wackness. KT would have been a very nice and different set from the rest of the festival. After KT was Zabiela and this guy rocks! The he does with the cdj's is jaw dropping. We only got to hear him for about 40 mins cuz we went to catch Magda at the beatport stage. Magda was meh. I assume it's only because they stole her lap top 3 weeks ago. Maybe she hasn't recovered anything but I could only listen to her for 30 more mins before going back to the Pioneer stage. James was done by then :(. Thankfully they had this playstation experience bus that had all these cool video game and for like 15 mins I played ratchet and clank and my bf played GTA4. The second day wasn't as great. When we finally got outside to hear Benny benassi for a bit he was okay. Was a bit cheesy at times but some songs weren't so bad. Couldn't take it anymore and since there was this rumor that the after party over sold tickets.. we decided to go home and get ready for that instead.

After parties are on a planet on their own. Truly insane and never ever seen anything like it. Not even anything remotely close to the that goes down. Will review those later.:tongue2

I recommend this to anybody with an open mind in Music. The festival was great. Detroit is cheap (Hotel flight parties..) The cab fares and the mission of trying to find a food place is what sucks. This area of detroit is a "working city" so everything is closed on the weekend.

sounds rather dangerous! justin long is amazing.

Glad you had a great time Mel... was thinking about going next year but then I keep hearing how ing shady Detroit is and someone being shot to death outside at the Temp. Tatoos party. I mean I love techno and all but... that.
MeLLyMeL
NO NO NO!

Biggest B.S. ever.

Detriot is not Shady.. atleast that area. It's a "working" city. The city is CLOSED and nothing is going on (AT ALL) during the daytime. It's D-E-A-D. At night there were some black ppl roaming the streets but few and far between. It's not sketchy in a bad way. The only thing that scared me was the crazy Techno kids on drugs. But man are they fun to watch!

Did you hear what happened to Zach? I feel so sorry for him.

But I had so much fun with the FLTA's and NYTA's that popped up behind me out of blue.. You def gotta go next year or I'll kick your ass. I'm skipping out on Oslo next year but wherever they have Volatl.. .Melly is sooooooooooooo there!

Also the one place to take a cab to is The Old Miami.. everywhere else- you can walk. As long as you get a hotel infront of Hart Plaza.

edit - forgot to add that I heard Paco Osuna for a bit too.

What's that supposed to mean for a mostly Techno festival? Europe has tons of outdoor fests and it's good to see ATLEAST one can compare. It was madness and it's on it's 9th year. It still hasn't become "commercial" like other festivals in the U.S.

The only real big names were Moby, Zabiela and Benny Benassi. Other than that where can you see ALL those dj's & MORE [after parties] in one weekend in the US? No where.

I Detroit.

Wow, great review Melly. It sounds amazing. Hmm def intrigued for next year...altho I dunno, other ppl kept telling me "Detroit...is....scary/broken O.o" lolz not much comfort in that but I guess just gotta be aware of what's around u at all times

the airport is the most suburban place I have ever seen in my life. So much green and trees all around. Houses are far far apart. Mega Suburban to the 10th power.

Then the cab ride to the hotel [near all the action] is 25-30 min ride. Other than that there are thousands and thousands of ppl at the festival. (Approx 75,000 this year alone) Police is always around the entire weekend and all throughout the streets. The only time it might seem a bit ghetto is at night when they are going to their clubs... But they def don't go where the techno after parties are.

I wouldn't go with my girls alone. I'd def bring along guy friends. Next year I am there and gonna try and stay the full 3 days. But it's hard. After parties are the main killers. I was at temporary Tattoos and although I left an hour early.. I didn't see anything out front except bouncers turning ppl away cuz it was at capacity.

I AM A HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE advocate of this weekend. I think anyone can enjoy the festival.. I think you need an OPEN OPEN OPEN mind to attend the after parties.

I didn't know KT was going to be performing. I didn't see him on the line up. Was that a last minute thing?

What happened to Zack? Is he OK?

Nope missy he was on the schedule. The one thing that I couldn't find was the damn performance schedule which was really stupid of me. I can't believe we had to hear KT from the outside

Zach didn't have the best experience @ The Old Miami.. :( . A bit glad I didn't go to that. Though next year I won't miss it :x hrhr.
